I am about to try and start an engine sitting for a long time. I pulled all the spark plugs sprayed wd40 in each cylinder and can hand crank it. Can I crank it by hand enough to see oil in the valve cover by looking in the fill hole. I want to know oil is getting to the engine before I do the rest, and would prefer not to remove the valve cover if I do not have to. I am sure the gasket is real old and I do not have money to waste checking the engine. I can spin it and hear know bad noises, just air coming out of the cylinders. I am guessing I can spin it at 150 RPM. Will I be able to see the oil, if so how long will I have to crank it.

Plan is to
Make sure Oil is pumping (Oil in engine looks new from PO)
Check compression
Rig up Electrical
Check for Spark
Fire up with Starter fluid
Install Radiator and start using gas from 1 gallon container.

I assume carb might need cleaning, fuel pump may or may not work, but I am hoping to have a good idea of the engine before I spend any money on it at all, would hate to buy gaskets, fuel pump etc to have bad hearings valves or something else major.

You've already done more than I ever have.

I would fix the fuel issue. Not a huge fan of starter fluid. Best of luck.

Pull dizzy (after marking ) Spin oil pump w a drill with a flathead screw driver in it. Put dizzy back exactly like you found it. Make sure it is all the way in or oil pump no workeee

not a big fan either, but it works good when an engine has had no gas in it for a real long time. Pooring gas down the carb is an option, but would prefer the starting fluid to gas does not go to one cylinder or flood the engine. Once I get a kick out of it I will push gas through the carb or take it off and clean it if needed. I have no clue what condition the carb is in at all.

I did the same thing a few years ago; resurrected an old '40 that had been sitting for a few years. Pulling the distributor was a bit intimidating for a rookie like me, so I did not do that.

Here's the link to my thread, start reading at post #39.

Good luck. I love my old school '40!

Thanks, I have worked some on engines so pulling dist not a big deal, but if I can spin the engine seems like that should be good enough. I have the marvel mistory oil already, will poor that in and give it some spins to make sure it frees anything up after I check compression dry. This is a 1980, and I just agreed to purchase a 1962 that has also been sitting for a long time without running, but that has prevented me from doing the compression today and getting the marvel in it. So you post will be perfect, it likely has some of the same stuff as yours. Thanks

pour gas down the carb and hit the key, it will either start or wont. once it fires watch the oil pressure gauge. im sure its fine. it should start and idle long enough to begin to build pressure from just what is in the bowl. no worries about no radiator or anything just yet. it can be run several minutes with no coolant and not have an issue.

I can watch the oil gauge, but since I bought this thing in pieces and boxes I will have to find it first, you think it will still show a reading? Plus do not even know if it works. But Seriously body is just sitting on the frame with 100% stripped of all parts, and does bring up another question, is there a way to check the pressure with no gauge, is there a simple cheap mechanical gauge I can hook up since basically I just have the engine in the frame and nothing else. You point is good, if I can see the oil pressure, hear no noises I will be happy. Looks like it has a new water pump and new oil, things you would not do it if did not run back then. My confidence in the engine is getting better, plus the guy I got it from here on mud seemed extemely nice and honest and said it ran fine before they took the body apart.

yea where the sending unit is for the oil pressure gauge put the mechanical one, you can get em cheap at any auto parts store for a basic gauge.
