Remind me not to let you look for fuel leaks on my rig 🤣😂 but seriously man just use some soapy water to check for leaks hell I think Windex even works
Hahaha, I got visual proof from where the flame started when I put a lighter down by the pilot with it in the pilot ignite mode. Its okay the main gas line stays shut off after winter is over, so its not like it was leaking.

I found the part online for $80. Worst case I see is we have to pay someone to fix something that's already broken
 
The pilot is rusted or cracked. Its releasing gas lower than where the ignitor is. I removed the glass and fake logs and held a lighter to see if it was a gas issue and the pilot was lighting at the base instead of where it should've been. Everytime I let go of the pilot button to switch to "on" it just died. So I'm thinking the gas isn't getting all the way up to where it should because of this leak
I used to install gas logs but I was a helper at the time and it was 15 years ago lol. Usually if the pilot doesn't hold a flame the thermocouple is bad. The steady flame on the thermocouple creates a slight voltage to keep the gas valve open. If it doesn't sense it it will automatically close the gas valve as a safety. Not sure how comfortable you are able to work on it but if in doubt just get a professional out. Better be safe than sorry.

I ordered the part finally.. it looks a bit intimidating, but then it also looks pretty straight forward. The pilot assembly comes as one piece and I'll just need to run the line it has into the hookup for gas. Plug the wires for the ignitor into the "fuse box" (since I don't know what its called).
Maybe I'm being too confident?

Straight forward basically just don't bend the pilot line and keep close as the orginal run. Test for leaks with soap and water and not with a lighter lol 😆 pm me if you need any assistance

If the leak is not at a fitting...look up the brand and order a replacement. I can help install. They may be pretty generic if you can not find a brand.

Kind of a lame update: today I aborted an attempt to install my new rear lower control arms. . .

Bottom line: didn't have the right drill setup to drill out the mounts from 14 to 18mm to mount the 80 series LCAs I bought to replace my bent ones.

Expanded version:
I bought Dobinsons 80 series LCAs, since I couldn't find anyone selling an LCA with rubber bushings (vice poly or those fancy rock-crawler ones) for a 100 except for Wit's End, who's out of stock and kind of snowed under at the moment, and possibly ARB, but they treated my inquiries as to tubing size/wall thickness and bushing types as definitely insulting ("we don't give out that kind of information"). Was just wondering what my hundred-dollars-more-than-everyone-else-charges is getting me . . . sorry. You can pound sand, ARB, although I am very much enjoying your 12V compressor.

So to install the 80 series LCAs, I need to drill the mounting holes out from 14 to 18mm to accommodate the 80 series bolts.

And it is a royal PITA to get to the outboard axle ears on both sides. Today I made an attempt and I could get the drill and step bit positioned, but it turns out the ear is angled toward the axle body, so I was not square to the ear. I am going to need to either use a traditional drill bit and drill through from the inboard side or use a step drill with a 1/4" hex base (which would fit in my 90-degree adapter), which is HARD. TO. FIND. I ordered a milwaukee bit that allegedly had a 1/4" hex base, but apparently they changed the design without changing the part number, so mine has a lame 3/8" shank. And then I ordered an Irwin step bit that was just an insane deal. And I found a Chinese step bit on WalMart.com that had a 1/4" hex shank, so should work with my 90-degree adapter. But it is stuck in New Jersey since 18 December, apparently. . .

I wish Dobinsons made these with the 100 series bushings (only difference between 80 and 100 series LCAs, according to my research), but they don't yet, so it looks like I wait for my Chinese bit to arrive and hope it's good enough quality to drill two holes. . . . (I can get the rest with my other step bits).

Precisely, but metric. Which it doesn’t look like they have. I must’ve spent an hour looking all over...
 
18mm is just slightly bigger than 11/16” in something that thin I don’t know how much it will make a difference drilling by hand just my opinion

Today, in preparation for pulling the engine/trans/transfer out of the 40, I went out for one last run in the desert, washed the truck, and did a compression test. Engine was warm, wide open throttle, but didn’t remove all the plugs. These are the results:

cylinder 1 - 122 psi
cylinder 2 - 122 psi
cylinder 3 - 112 psi
cylinder 4 - 120 psi
cylinder 5 - 120 psi
cylinder 6 - 120 psi

Adjusted for my altitude of 4300ft I used a correction factor of 0.87 which puts me at about 140 psi in 5 cylinders and 130 psi in one cylinder at sea level. The variance is within 10% so I think the compression looks alright.

The engine has about 5500 miles since it was rebuilt in 2010. I have the receipt and the engine work was done at Rockville Ring and Pinion in Rockville, MD.

Front seat therapy: Powder coated the bottom seat frame reassembled with refreshed spring retaining clips (stripped, cleaned & painted), seat springs.

I have the Cool Cruisers seat covers for my 40 but have not installed them.
The stitching looks tight and well done on the backsides but have not idea on the fitment.
My hang up on the job was finding a new seat cushion.
There is no way I’m paying $250 for the front seat foam from the one vendor that sells it for a 40.
 
@1MOA the SOR shipping/handling scam is exactly why I’m considering the CCOT covers. I may have a spare set of seat foams in good shape. I’ll let you know once I have a chance to assess their condition. First, I need to disassemble the extra seats I have to scavenge some bits for my reupholstery project.

By the way, I’m adding some extra protection between the seat springs and foam with this:

I replaced the seat foam and seat covers on the 45 with material from SOR. I'm happy with the way the foam and covers fit (not so happy with the material cost and shipping charges), I just wish I had checked out the springs better before I started. It turns out that the springs were pretty weak so I bottom out the seat going over bumps.
 
@76FJ40 that was a concern for me too. I was able to rearrange my seat springs to accommodate wear. The seat spring closest to the rear was the shortest of the bunch and I swapped its position with the 2nd spring from the front. The 1st spring from the front is unique and could not be interchanged with the others.

I have some seat cushions in my parts stash that you can have for the cost of shipping from NM. I’ll pull them out today and post pics. Can’t guarantee they’re any good but you can assess the pics and let me know.
