I need to replace my rotors and pads on my lx450. Does anyone know if the powerstop rotor and pad upgrade is still better than OEM rotors with the 100 series pad upgrade as far as increased stopping ability is concerned? This is not for a DD but mainly offroad use.

Thanks

I'm pretty sure it has been said before but the 100 series pads are generally about longevity not stopping power.
I have drilled/slotted from the PO, they are filled with mud in the holes, it is baked in and never coming out.

There is a really awsome book series by Carroll Smith (one of the super - men behind Carroll Shelby's success). In "engineer to win" iirc he gives the opinion that slots and holes do little more than take away friction surface. This makes sense unless you are always on the brakes (mountain grade?) . For me in Michigan, I'm staying stock rotor

I would stay stock rotors, but get some nice hawk pads. Everyone I've talked to that uses them says they work great. I had 100 series pads and I wouldn't use them again. They stick out a little over the sides of the rotor and I haven't noticed any difference in performance compared to the pads I have now.

Great. Thanks guys. I think I am convinced to stay OEM and just get really good pads.

I have to agree with the others about properly working stock brakes being more than sufficient. Perhaps with 37" tires things are more noticeable, but I have no complaints about the stock setup with 100 series pad. That said, I just went with DBA slotted rotors since my OEMs had a slight warp. But I think that was likely due to a sticky caliper, not an issue with the rotor itself. I don't feel any difference between them and the stock rotors in everyday driving.

I have drilled rotors on my BMW. They look real cool! Other than that they are useless today. The drilled came from racing years past to help expel the gasses generated during heavy breaking. Modern pads today do not have this type of off gassing so the holes or slots serve no function.

Now pad selection can have a huge impact on your breaking performance. But with everything else there are trade offs for each type you go with. It all depends on what you aim to do with the vehicle.

Glad I read this thread as I was about to start a new thread for relevance...

So, what I'm reading is that the drilled/slotted does nothing more than look cool..

Powerstop has a pretty good deal on their combo rotors/pads... How do their OE replacements work?

I have a set of PowerSLOT slotted rotors and a set of Hawk pads on my 07 Tundra and like the combo (took about 7k miles for full coverage on the rotor and they have a little "grab" at release, but they're a powerful set.

I will look into a similar combo, but what ultimately works best for the FZJ80s?

At $160, it's still cheaper by about $20 it seems than OEM.....

EDIT: Just realize those were powerstop.. and not powerslot.. Anybody know the difference?

After pricing out PowerSLOT rotors and Hawk Pads on AJUSA (used 'em before with the Tundra with great results on price matching, etc), they're about $83/rotor (rear) and about $77 for pads... that adds up quickly.

What are your guys' recommended on the REAR of these things? I have the local mechanic specials on the front.

I've been running slotted rotors now for a while. Both DBA and Powerstops. They do not fade as much for me. I'm heavy, tow often, and live in the mountains.

My EBC yellow stuff pads have offered more bite. They do dust up the wheels if you care, I don't. Green Stuff pads would cure that but not have as much bite. I don't care for OEM pads.

This is good to know as I plan on goin with dba slotted rotors and ebc pads for my next change.

Those dba rotors look nice.

Do you guys think they're worth it for the rear of the rig? I have nothing special up front, which is where I would normally put my money.

I plan on having the rig for a while, but maybe not through another set of rear pads or two

No, the front brakes do ~70%+ of the braking, that's where I'd spend my money. Properly functioning brakes is all you need on the rear.

Yeah you're right. I guess it comes down to OEM vs those power stops. I guess rear rotors don't really warp. Maybe ill do the powerstop and a set of decent pads

Oddly enough I just bought the Power Stop front rotors from RockAuto for the fzj80 yesterday. They were $48 a piece. Today they're $55 a piece (not sure why the price difference). I believe these are the same rotors that Slee sells.
