Searched, but found nothing other than Hydro assist threads. My 80 is mainly used for camping and light wheeling. My P/S pump is crapping out(belt SCREAMING when I turn). I found refurbs for a little over 100 bucks, but was wondering if there was a way to convert to a more reliable pump.

bump - looking for upgrade options as well.

I have a '96 btw

A more reliable pump than the one that lasted for 20 years with little or no maintenance? I assume you only want to spend $50 as well...

Sorry, I can't help the snarky attitude. The stock pump is adequate for the usage... just get another one or rebuild the one you have.

The fact that the original thread post from nearly 5 years ago got no replies should tell you there is nothing better. Can you name the other passenger car that you saw that has a PS pump with a cast steel housing, is gear instead of belt driven and makes 1500 psi?
Be fair to your 80 and drop the coin on a brand new unit.

That is my plan. I'll pick up a new one just curious if there are more robust options.

I'm having the same problems with my '96 LX. Do we just get one from @beno or @cDan? Do you have to do a core exchange or anything like that? Pardon my ignorance.

I haven't re-read exactly what your problem is, but you can rebuild yourself in most cases. Or I think for $300-$400 you can can buy a rebuilt one.

Guess you are talking about 3F engine belt driven PS pump .?

I did have a PSC pump on Tencha which had a belt driven PS pump and very happy with the upgrade ( pump along oil cooler, big PSC reservoir etc .. )

Just noticed my '97 pump is leaking. I hate leaks so this must get fixed ASAP. Is the rebuild a PITA? Mine appears to be leaking out of the back. Haven't really checked it out yet & am not familiar w/this style pump.

Its not bad other than one small circle clip. Also quite cheap, I think a kit from Rockauto and new Nichi bearing will set you back less than $25.

If your mechanical it's fun.
Clean and label everything and number it on a big piece of cardboard as you remove it.
Buy the Gates Kit on Rock and use the 15% off coupon. It's OEM Spec and Proven.
Get a qt of Full Synthetic Tranny Fluid and a can of brake cleaner.
Don't drop the fins out of the Rotor and keep it extra clean.
You will need a 3 arm puller which they have for rent at Autozone.
Hold the gear using Wood or Rag in Vice. Don't grab the gear with the vice Jaws.
Take your time since, Haste makes Waste.
It's a pretty good design.
