Some time this week I will try to figure out how bad my recent oil pressure / engine knock problem is. I've done some searches on the board and have seen mentioned that a leaking power steering pump can get into the gear case oil. How? Also references to leaking power steering pump effecting the smog pump. don't get that either. Thanks.
Tom

gear case? you mean crank case? on the later 1FZ equiped 80's the power seering pump is direct gear driven, the input sahft for the pump is in a crankcase area, if it gets a leak in the front of the pump it leaks into the crankcase

were you misteriously loosing PS fluid? it would take quite a bit of powering steering fluid to cause the problems you describe .

I dont have a smog pump (96) have not payed any attension to them............

I had the seal fail between the power steering pump and the motor on the ShortBus. This was on Prichett Canyon and without power steering it was a bitch. I had to add a quart of fluid before the end of the trail, all which ended up in the motor not very long after adding it. If you do not know that the fluid is going into the motor and you keep on adding, you might cause problems in the motor. Not sure how much it likes to run on ATF

You need to specify which motor you have. 1fzfe doesn't have a smog pump, and the PS pump is mounted to the block and driven by the crank. 3FE has belt-driven PS and smog pumps. On the 2F, the PS pump would leak into the smog pump mounted below and kill it. Not sure if the 3FE has the same setup.

Tom,

Has the crank pulley been removed lately?

Thanks for the responses. I looked under the hood and get it now. I've got a 92 FJ. The PS pump is belt driven and over the A/C compresor. There is a smog pump on the other side above the alternator. My PS is leaking a little.

I was hoping (still am) for an easy explination for the engine knock. So far it seems to only happen when the engine get's up to operating temp then the oil presssure drops to zero and the knock starts. I'm going to pull the oil pan and take a look.

Dan has good prices on parts if you want to rebuild it yourself.

So now you guys have me a little worried. My resivoir cap is leaking. Trying to order a new one but i think Dan is off today. So would my leaking cap cause ATF fluid to leak into the crankcase? Don't see how, but now i'm nervous.

Cap

So would my leaking cap cause ATF fluid to leak into the crankcase?

I highly doubt a leaking PS cap can get into your crankcase.

IMO your motor knock is unrelated to the power steering pump.
