Power steering death whine

Mine is whining too at the moment, only because it hemhorrages fluid like crazy. It all comes out from under the reservoir cap.
 
If your somewhat mechanically competent, this is a satisfying job if you have the time.
Plus then you can appreciate how it's put together.

Metal precision fins are in a round disc (rotor) and slide out to pressurize the fluid as it spins.
All the internals are in a bath of fluid so they are constantly lubricated.
The 94-97 are gear driven off the motor so there is no belt to fail.
The downside is if the gasket would leak the ATF would mix with motor oil.

I removed pump in middle of winter, in driveway, using a headlamp and laying on a piece of cardboard, took about 1 hr.
I disassembled pump that night, inspected and cleaned everything with brake cleaner. Lay out each component as you disassemble on cardboard you can make notes and number each item. This makes assembly childs play as everything is in order.
