probably volume control...

man these are all kick ass.
i can't wait to buy some gauges.
though I am currently having a JOYFUL time ripping appart my dash to get my japanese stereo out.
that thing has so many wires I could run a cable to tokyo. Its so hard core that it has stuff connected to the speedo!

Bard T, nice idea! How did it work?
I hate my overhead unit anyways, I use GPS so the compass is redundant and the altimeter, well.. who needs that when you have a GPS right.
Did you post a build thread for that? How did you get the wires up there I assume A pillar... Please tell use more with photos!
I may want to copy yours and not ruin my vents now.
Thanks

Foreal, where you able to angle those towards the driver seat? Can you read them clearly while driving?
Interested to know if they need to be angled or not.
Thanks

I dig it. I was going for this in my 81 but I realized that It would involve cutting the dash. So i said screw it and made this quickly.
Did the trick. Bit of a tricky spot to put it because of the slope of the dash and the depth of the gauges. I am going the din slot route on the 73. Wayne you got a pm.

The dash has a natural angle to it toward the drivers seat. I could see them while driving. I liked the spot because it wasn't invasive.
I ended up buying a RHD pillar pod off of ebay and I didn't end up putting it on because it would be really really invasive to put it in. You can get them off ebay if you want to go that route. My one friend had that on his rig. My dream spot would have been in the stereo slot. Will be doing that as soon as I find/buy a 73. If you have any questions give me a shout. Some guy in the 80 series forum just put up his gauge install in the same spot and made a SWEET fiberglass one.

I just added the trans temp gauge. It might not be for everyone but it works for me. I still have to take out the dash and do some touch ups but that will happen after our trip.

cheers

Sorry, I don't have any better pictures. It's pretty straight forward. You need to make the face plate for the gauges and run your wires and such down the A pillar. Easy stuff that just takes time. I love my gauges up there and keeps a factory look IMO.

what it's the function of the ARB style switch in your shifter ..?

Trucker style, front and rear locker switches. I planned on putting the compressor, front, and rear switches in place of the rear wiper, rear heater, and rear defrost switches above the gauges, but I like them on the shifter, they're right there when you need them.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. where did you get that shifter knob? Is that from a Celica/Supra?

I think it came with my ae86. I don't like it though, I like the original knob, but I couldn't find one.

thats a kinda cool idea  bit rough around the edges, but could have merit. Have you bumped them on accidently at all?

There have been a few times I have hit one of the switches, but with the compressor switch off the diffs won't lock, I just turn the switch back off. They really arnt in the way, if I was constantly hitting the lockers I would have moved them off the shifter. I bought the truck with them installed as they are.

Heres some Iphone pics of my Madman install - flush mounted - in a Mudpod. Seems like the pod was made for this location, almost OEM. Have plenty of room left for future gauges/outlets/switches...... Did this a while back - maybe this'll help someone else use the wasted space:beer:

do you figure the madman could be mounted in a din spot?

Not the EMS 1. I tried the bottom DIN and the overhead Compass/Alt, but no luck. The EMS 2 would fit in either location though.

I really like this set-up. I have: Hour Meter, Voltmeter, EGT, Oil Pressure, Tranny Oil Temp, Coolant Temp, Coolant Level and horiz/vert Angle. All with programmable high/low values hooked to an alarm.

The kit included everything needed for install, VDO senders and even the tap. I'm only missing Boost, as I chose to have Oil Pressure instead. Install was straightforward. Except for the new tranny cooler union from Wholesale Automatics. PITA.
