Here is a video of the metal tech cat guard and sliders in action. Not pretty, but not a lot of options either. The high clearance front bumper was also helpful.

I would worry more about the Tcase than the tranny
The tranny is tucked up pretty good

Jason and I inspected the under carriage of my 81 when we got back. While there were a couple nicks and scratches on the factory tranny skid 'plate' (I use the term plate loosely here, it's a fibreglass cover really), they looked like older marks. The t-case skid plate on the hand was definetly well used with lots of recent marks.
But a metal tranny plate would not be a bad idea.

It is very possible to punch the trans pan... Not likely or easy, but doable.

If you really want to impress us, take out the oil pan

I have a dent on my oil pan from a previous trip. Probably happened when I also bent the the drag link on that trip.
