I have the opportunity to trade out my 18" OEM wheels with Cooper Discoverer H/T plus tires for a set of 17" RW wheels with Goodyear wrangler Duratracs. My buddy has a Tundra that he uses for real estate and wants to make it less aggressive looking and I want to go the other way.

Both sets of tires have about 20k miles on them. I am clearly getting more value out of this so my question for the group is how much money should i kick in to make it a fair trade? This is a good friend and i'm not looking for a screaming deal but something we both feel good about.

Thoughts?

RWs have been listed anywhere from $200- $300/ wheel depending on where you look, completeness, condition, etc. Sometimes better deals are out there. I don't know much about the market for stock wheels, other than it's not nearly as strong as that of the RWs. IIRC, they're pretty much impossible to get new anymore.

Ask him what he thinks is a fair price and go from there. No point in over-offering and then having to negotiate against yourself for a better deal.

Kinda depends on the friendship. My buddies and I give each other stuff all the time and never expect to be paid back with cash (one friend of mine has given me $200+ in knives over the last couple of years because he "orders extra" lol). I'd tell him you think there's a disparity between the two sets of wheels/tires and ask him if he wants cash to make up the difference or if you can get him the next few dinners/drinks/football games/whatever.

Like @mcgaskins, my friends and I "trade" stuff a lot and no cash changes hands (camera gear, audio gear, boating gear, etc). What have you got you don't need that he wants? Maybe offer to pay labor for the TPMS trade (if the sensors are different), balancing, remounting, installing, etc. ?

yeah, we are in the same boat regarding swapping stuff but I feel like I am getting a lot more in this trade so am trying be be fair...plus he is throwing in a light bar. I think we landed on me paying him the difference in retail cost between the tires. Wheels are a straight swap since he is excited to get mine.

I’ve paid as low as $300 for a full set of RW.... Another $800...and $900 with lugs. Another set was $400 with lugs. I’ve bought single RW wheels for $100...and $140. Craigslist sells them all the way up to $2k. So it’s all over the map. Nowadays it is tough finding a set under $1k...so really up to you.

Do have a shed full of RW wheels that you are hoarding?

I wish. But no... I have passed most of them along to friends from the forum. Just helpin me mud mates! :)

I only have 7 wheels total right now (including the 5 on my 200). I’d like 3 more for a total of 10...so that I can have 2 mounted sets with spares. Would like to add a set of full mud tires for major wheeling trips...and my ATs regular uses.

We're going to have to start calling you Market Mover Mark for manipulating the finite supply of Rock Warriors :D Could RWs provide some sort of a hedge against equities perhaps? :hmm:

Oh, I don't know... I've been striking out lately. Really need three more. Pretty scarce (but I'm just a poor peasant...so I have to wait for bargains...).

Usually just local stuff, although I did cart one home from Colorado, and a set for another from Arizona. :)

Full disclosure... I FAILED @Atwalz recently. I was supposed to send him a spare off my own truck and didn't get around to it. He found a nice full set yesterday though, so I can stop feeling guilty. :grinpimp:

I recently (after 2 years of looking) bought a set of RWs locally for $700 (without lug nuts), including the original K02 tires (worn out). Had to spend another $200 or so for new lug nuts. So there ARE some RW bargains still out there, just real hard to find. I frequently see some for sale on Craig's List, but they're all in Denver. I also gave away the original LC wheels and am now running current Tundra TRD wheels with their original Michelins. Those Michelins are truly amazing in the snow--love 'em. But, I can't wait to get the RWs with Duratracs on the LC. That will happen soon.

If I were the OP, I would kick in somewhere between $200-400, just so his buddy doesn't decide some day that he got screwed in the deal. But really, it's up to them.
