I see conflicting reports all the time. How fast can you safely hold your rig on the road?

Mmmm I run my 40 with a 5.8 to 55-60 mph on cruise speed, but i pushed to 80 a few times.

90mph with still a little left under the right boot:D and stable too.

Can't wait for the new 2F ETI to go in:grinpimp:

are we talking safe, comfortable traveling speeds here? Say you are going across your state to an event... What continuous top speed do you really maintain?

Hi All Four,
My 40 is a 1981 STOCK standard, NO PS, drums all round, ratio
at 4.11, SUA with 4" shackles, B 3L engine and on 31.5x10xR15.

Cruises between (90-100)km/hr or (55-62)miles/hr.
Touches speeds between (105-115)km/hr or (65-70)miles/hr.
......... comfortably...
Have NOT gone beyond 115km/hr.

regards,
HelimanBD.

The post asks for top speed, I can cruise all day at 70mph but touch 90mph here and there and no stability issues.

Running 60 series power steering with 75 series steering set up and a steering dampener, castor corrected to suit 35 AT's, diff's 4.56.

Oh yes and a H55 5 speed:D

Have a 78 FJ 40, with my pedal buried to the floor it gets up to about 65mph. Don't know how fast if we were going down hill! Still have stock 2F which has had one rebuild from the previous owner.

I hear this is a common problem, but then again people say all the time that they can hold 70mph easy. Thanks for all the input. It will be interesting to see where everyone goes with this.

65 is about my upper limit. It would go faster, but I wouldn't. If you think you are at all safe above 65 or 70 in a tall, narrow, short wheel base vehicle, you are kidding yourself.

My 1974 FJ40 wouldn't do 70 if I drove it off a cliff. Hope to replace the F with a 2F this winter. Then I can shoot for 71 hehehe

Try revisiting your setup if you are uncomfortable. I run at 75MPH (2500rpm) all the time with ease and in total comfort. Hell I have pulled my popup at 75MPH. Put some caster in the front end and it tracks excellent. I run 7 degrees FWIW.

Here's the page on the Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage site where the 1960's TV advertisment claims you can cruise "85mph all day long" on the open road with the F135 powered FJ40.

I have no doubt that's true. I certainly make that easily in my truck, although it's most comfortable in the longer wheel based FJ45.

That said, there's what you can do, and what you should do, and Andrew is correct that it really doesn't feel safe to go that fast in an FJ40.

Have a '78 with a webered 2f 4 speed, fairey overdrive, and stock sized tires. 65 mph is a comfortable speed, but 70 mph can be achieved:rolleyes: if you want to.

Had a '69 totally stock with 3 speed on tree. For some reason I had a hard time keeping it below 70 mph when cruising on highway. Was very fast....and unsafe:frown:.

'78 is much more comfortable driving rig by far. 40's are not race cars they are 4X4s made to go where others can't.

I have come to enjoy life in the slow lane with some poor fuming sucker who has not learned to take life easy for awhile behind me:D.

Can't argue with that:grinpimp:
