so I have had a bit of a issue over the last few weeks with my bj74. some mornings when I come out to start it, around 0C my batteries are low. Had them checked and was told they are in poor health and have about half the cca they should. easy fix , new batteries. why though would this be happening. I talked to the local cruiser shop and they told me to change the brushes and voltage regulator, wanting $120 for the parts. maybe just me but I like to be sure of the problem before dumping money that I might not have to spend. also this seems like a little much but I really dont know. The only other thing I can think of is that there is a draw draining the batteries when it is parked. I have NO accesories wired in at all, the electrical system is stock, so i don't know what could cause this. would apprecialte any opinions or help you all could offer. thanks J

Have you tested your alternator to see that it's producing sufficient voltage? You can also remove the brushes and regulator from the alternator and take them in to any decent alternator/starter place and they can test them for you in 5 minutes.

Head over to Rockys Batterty on the south side. They will test your alternator. I was having the same problem last fall/winter. Went in alt good replaced batts with the largest that would fit in engine bay and never looked back. Both batts cost me around $330 installed. It was easily the best $300 I spent in a long time. She starts like dream ever since all the way through last winter.

Hey,
I'm new to this forum, so hopefully this post goes to the right spot. I've searched around the forums a bit, trying to find info on alternator problems. I bought my BJ60 (I'm the man for sweet deals) for 500 with a dead alternator. I have been charging the batteries at night so that I can run the truck the next day. I've also got pretty good at parking on hills and push starting it. Anyways, I took the truck to a very good auto electrician, and he told me the alternator is not working. Is there somewhere that I can get another alternator, or should I just try an alternator rebuild? The guy I brought it to to get checked said he wouldn't be able to rebuild it because he wouldn't be able to get parts.

Hey, I'm new to this site, so hopefully this post goes to the right spot. I've got the same problem as OilersRule, and I've already had the alternator checked by an auto electrician. He told me the thing is not working at all, and that he doesn't think he can get parts to fix it. Does anyone know if there is somewhere that I can get a new or reconditioned alternator from? I've got an '83 BJ60.
