I am a welder with access to some metal fab equipment. I wanted to know if there were any plans out there for making a nice front bumper with winch that I could make myself? I have not seen anything like it on the thread. I bottomed out yesterday front and back. I really need to get my tire out of there and do the same thing to the rear end with a swing out.
By bottom out do you mean making contact on your approach and departure angles? The rear will always be a problem due to the length of the rear of the truck post axle. Just make sure the rear bumper is stout and drag it behind you like a grader. For the front it's actually quite easy to mock something up. Start with some cardboard and go from there.
There are a few CADs out there of folk's builds, but you would have to sort through a few hundred "my bumper build" threads to find them. You could also do a google image search for fj80 bumper or fzj80 bumper and see what you can find.
Yeah, I did that. I was thinking there would be a lot out there. Cardboard is not a bad idea. I am sure I will come up with something. When I went under the front bumper, I noticed that there is about a 3-4 inch welded extension that attaches to the bumper. Is there any reason that should stay put? I can think of some good reasons to cut those off and narrow the distance to my wheels from the front end.
LOL on dragging the rear end. That is exactly what I have been doing. But that receiver not only dropping 4-5 inches from the bumper, and then sticking out another 3-4 inches cannot help.
The receiver can be dragged around as much as you like, it's like a slider for the butt of the truck. If you take it off, the rear bumper "wings" will get beat to snot and twisted up, but the center section of the stock rear bumper is actually part of the frame and is very stout.
For the front bumper, search for "bumper ideas" or something like that. I remember @bhicks posted up a thread in which there were a a lot of photos and drawing to plagiarize. I haven't seen any actual plans on MUD, but wouldn't be surprised if they are out there.
