Hello Everyone,

I'm looking to start collecting the parts I need to do a 700r4 transmission swap, and I want to make sure I get the right components to begin with.

Truck info: 1975 FJ40, 305 SBC, Stock 4 Speed w/ AA Ranger III Manual Overdrive kit, 4spd transfer case

These are the main parts that I *think* I need so far:

700r4
AA (P/N 50-8902) GM 700R4 to Toyota Land Cruiser
AA (P/N 716004) Toyota Land Cruiser Crossmember Mount
Shifter

I understand I may also need some miscellaneous and custom fabricated parts (mounts, driveshafts etc). Is it worth it to go for a rebuilt 700r4 or am I ok with a pull from a working vehicle? *If I end up doing the swap is there any resale value selling the ranger III? Thanks

You will need the correct bracket to hook up the TV (throttle valve) cable to the throttle body or carb. The adjustment on this cable is sensative so be sure to get the correct, adjustable bracket and cable. You will need to change the flywheel to a flexplate, they use different bolts. The starter may also be different. Don't forget cooling. you will need to bend up some cooler lines and add a cooler. Finally, the driveshaft lengths may need to be changed as the 700r4 is much longer than the manual trans.

You will need to flip the rear springs for certain. You will also need to cut out the cross member behind the T-Case and move it back or fab a new one. I already installed my 700R4, but have not gotten the project far enough to run yet. Lots of fun :)

Everything that everyone mentioned above you will need. I have a 700R4 behind my sbc 350 w/ stock TC and used a AA kit to mate everything. I fabbed my own xmember and ended up using the AA twin stick shifter kit for my TC. I used a Lokar shifter for my tranny. You will probably also need an extended parking brake cable to allow for proper operation of you parking break since your drivetrain will become longer. You will also need to purchase a torque converter lockup kit unless you are going to install TBI and allow the computer to control your lock up function. I actually bought a lockup kit from AA and ended up not using it because I went the TBI route and used the computer to control my lockup function.

Nick,

Good comment on the parking brake cable. I thought about that issue long ago, btu forgot until you mentioned it. Where did you get yours?

I wish I knew what I had inside my trans. It came out of a 40 and the plug was replaced with a cap. The PO said it had some sort of kit installed, but I don't know if it's just a shift kit or a lockup kit too.

Thanks for the input so far. Nick, I just spent the last hour or so going through your thread, amazing work! Both yours and srgoulds buildups are very helpful, especially since you have pics with the tubs off.

Steve, I actually started messing w/ my parking brake cable yesterday and thought I would have to get a new one, but it fit with my current setup. It is VERY close but it does reach w/ the proper routing of the cable. I hooked it up last night and it works. I need to adjust my pads on my parking brake, but I think it should work out ok.

Glad it helped. And disregard what I said above about your cable not fitting. Depending on placement of you engine, you should be able to make your cable fit.

When I was where you are in planning, an AA adapter for the 700r4 to Toyota T case added about 4" of length. I spent about 4-5 hundred more than the adapter cost and used a Marlin toybox to convert and it added only 2.5 inches to drivetrain length over the adapter. I moved the motor as far forward as possible and flipped the rear springs to have enough for a rear driveshaft- although it is going to be a short expensive one from Tom Woods. I'm almost done and should be driving in a couple weeks.

So I finally got this project started over the long 4th of July weekend. I removed the driveshafts, tcase, 4spd tranny, and torque splitter. The AA adapter for my 700r4 is out of stock for a few weeks so I'll start by moving the engine up and setting up the frame. I also picked up a good looking 700R4 a few weeks ago. If you guys have any more suggestions please chime in! Thanks

So progress is slow on this conversion, but I want to start ordering some parts. Can anyone chime in as to what TV cable to buy? I have 305 SBC Carb setup. Any transmission cooler suggestions? I already have flipped the rear springs to get as much driveshaft length as possible. Hopefully I can get my cruiser back on the road soon! Thanks

I bought a TCI universal cable from Summit. Works great. I got very, very, lucky on my Rochester as it had a later year throttle bracket on it that had the correct mount geometry for the 700R4. Made life a whole lot easier getting it connected. I picked up a TCI bracket that mounts to the rear carb mount bolts to attach the throttle and kick down cables.

For a transmission cooler I bought a B&M 70274 from Summit. I bought some lengths of (4 1/2' I think) 5/16" steel line and bent it to fit. It fit well. I needed a few fittings to adapt it to the tranny and some 5/16" hose adapters to mate the cooler to the lines. Easier than hard lines all the way. I also added a tee at the tranny cooler output port so I could mount a temp sensor. Then some line clamps to hold the line to the frame, steel to make a bracket to mount the cooler, etc.

Hey guys, well this project has been dragging on but I'm finally about to mount my 700R4/AA 8902/4 Speed Transfer case. Does anyone have any pics of the transfercase linkage? The AA adapter came with a black bracket that is supposed to bolt onto the side of the adapter, but my tc linkage has been taken apart (wish I took some pics before I took it apart last year). Thanks

dont forget this step ... i had a friend with a brand new 700r4 that broke after a few hundred miles cause it was not installed correctly. at least thats what the tranny guy said.. their fault and they replaced it..

What's up man, your build is looking great, I actually bought my cruiser from a guy in west covina.
