Having never really stopped there, just driven through a bunch, i'm going to take my mom to Asheville tomorrow. I need to know some good places to go. I've heard there are some great bars there and and incredible beer store...... where are these as well as some good sight seeing places.

Please don't mention biltmore ;)

Go by Pack's Tavern and see if Ross is working. If so, tell him you are friends with Barnes and me. Haven't been there yet personally, they just opened a few months ago, but place looks pretty dope.

 R

Al, there was a Caribbean (Dominican, Puerto Rican, Cuban) restaurant in downtown, damn if I can remember the name, but their food was absolutely spectacular. Susana and I still talk about the place. I'll give a dollar to anyone who can tell me the name. If you're looking for a great and different meal, I recommend this place.

my favs....

Mello Mushroom pizza.... better then the one in triangle... there is also an irish bar in the down town area I can't remeber the name of it they have a ton of beer choices
have fun

Maybe try The Thirsty Monk as well. You have to hit Bruisin' Ales too.

Packs Tavern is awesome!
Good food, cool location, good beers!

I 2nd the Thirsty Monk - Belgian beer HQ

There are a few pizza place downtown that is really good...
If you're staying the night, Corner Kitchen is a great brunch spot! Yummy

I think the Highland Cold Mountain is out by now - great on draft!

Havana - it's a Cuban restaurant.

You can send my dollar thru Paypal.

Marlyn and I really like Tupelo Honey for breakfast or lunch.

For sight seeing, the Biltmore is cool, especially at Xmas. But it's expensive. There's a winery there too.

I like going to the Grove park Inn around Xmas. We've only stayed there once. But the Christmas atmosphere is nice, Giant fireplaces, decorations, etc.
The lunch there was affordable, you can sit on the huge outdoor deck. Dinner was kinda steep.

you dont have to stay there to hang out and eat/drink.

How far do you want to go? Maybe hit some of the parkway?

From Asheville take 191 to the parkway and the NC arboretum is right here and would be nice to take mom to. Then hop on the parkway and head North and then back down to asheville at one of the next exits.

If you skip the parkway you could drive down to Pisgah Forest entrance hwy 280 and 276 and go up to looking glass falls (where you guys went camping this summer) and then do a short hike if shes a hike type of girl at cove falls just past looking glass falls on the rt.

*caution though parts of BRP are closed as well. I would say go to Pisgah Inn for brunch but its closed too.

I agree with the above. plus Barleys downtown is nice pizza/beer/billiards/darts type place (maybe not the one for mom) and right below it is Boudreaux's I believe thats had a decent band the couple times ive been there. Both of those are south of pack sqaure/vance monument downtown. Pretty easy to park and pick a place as well. We usually wander around doing laps and looking for a good looking joint and a parking spot. Just West of Pack Square is a whole network of shops and restaurants

Or head to Haywood street and west asheville for sunny point or west end bakery for lunch.

Not a bad time yesterday, thanks for all the suggestions.

We had a long stop at chimney rock so that ate up a lot of our time.
Went to bruising ales, then went to biltmore village and ate at neo cantina, was pretty good.

Next time I plan on going bar hopping and hitting up most of the places suggested.

ate at neo cantina, was pretty good.

Good to hear. It used to be called La Paz. Was my favorite mexican restaurant. Good to know it hasn't gone down hill.
