I have a homemade rack on my 95 that sits above the factory roof rack. The quik n easy clamps allow plenty of clearance.

No, no write ups on it.

I had a buddy that welds. We got some 1" square tubing for the frame and supports with a steel mesh floor.

We basically made 2 - 60 x 48 frame pieces with rounded 90 degree corners that he got from a metal bender. Then cut pieces and attached them vertically between the two square tubing frame pieces to make it 6" tall. (I got most of the square tubing that I used for free from a fence company. It was extra scrap that they had from different jobs they were going to send the recycle center.) The front to back cross members are 1" square tubing and the left to right supports are 1 1/2" expanded metal.

To attach the clamps, we welded 2 pieces of the 1" square tubing left to right between the outer edge and the 1st front to rear support. The spacing was 1/2 inch for the bolts that run through the gutter clamps.

I did it before I really knew much about MUD, so I didnt do any write ups on it. (besides, everyone would just knock it for the weight.....:D ) Thing weighs a ton (figure of speech...actually its about 75 pounds), but it is strooooong. I can put my 220 lbs. on it with no trouble at all.

It was originally cut in half with holes drilled in it for transporting it, but I decided not to bolt it. After I ordered the clamps, I drove the cruiser over to his house where we had to weld it back together and put it on right there.

If you want better pics of the rack, I can get em for you later. Just let me know......

Yes, more details on this please :)

Does the bottom of the rack sit on the top of the factory rack or is it completely separate?

Rick

The bottom of the rack is about a half inch (IIRC) above the top of the factory roof rack. It is totally separate..... I didnt want to remove the factory rack and worry about filling in the holes......

i want more pics

Yeah, I don't really want to remove the factory rack, but I still want the safari rack to sit as low as possible, so I'm thinking about building it to sit on the factory rack, then weld on the supports around it....

If you rest it on the factory rack, it would probably limit the max load that you could haul to about 150 lbs. By using the gutter clamps, you can distribute the load to 3 or 4 points on each side of the rack to allow for more weight. I guess it just depends on what you plan on putting on it.

I haul 3 gas cans, my 35" spare, ice chests, etc. on it. It does well for that.

When my 4x4 labs bumper is finished and shipped, I wont have as much weight on it.

I'll try and post some pics this evening.

I still plan on using the gutter mounts for the weight, but I want it to sit as low as possible with the factory rack still in place...

Here are some pics of the roof rack and clamps...if you need something else, just let me know and I'll try to take em.

I plan on building my own safari style rack ...

Rick,
If you will SEARCH you should find a number of rack options. I really like the look of the clamps on the one that TinStar built. Look over the ROTW for Johnny WildOats (I think that is his name). He calls it the J-Moose rack and there are a couple of guys that have done something similar with his basic idea.

Another option is the company out of Flagstaff, AZ. I think it is Black-something. Again, a search of the archives should turn something up for you. This one is a basic rack, painted or unpainted, with no mounts. The price is very aggressive and probably about what you would pay just for the metal. The guy sells them on eBay so a search using keyworks=rack, eBay should turn up something. Let me know if you can't find it.

As for keeping the factory rack... you would be better off removing it.

What is the exact width of your rack? Looks to be a bit wider than 48". I'm thinking of adding a 54" wide rack on my cruiser but afraid it might look funky. Also, where did you order the gutter clamps? TIA

My bad.... the rack is 54" x 60". I was trying to go from memory when I posted. I guess my lapses are getting worse than I thought.

Quik n easy clamps is the manufacturer of the gutter clamps. They are in California. Their website has been down A LOT. I called them direct to ask about pricing but I bought the clamps from Altrec. It was the same price as quoted by the manufacturer, but they had free shipping.

Thanks Chris,

That clamp shop is not far from me. Too bad they don't sell them in sets of 6. You wouldn't happen to have a pic from a front angle would ya'?

I think so, I'll try to remeber when I get home. I believe they are on the laptop. If not, I'll take one.

Much appreciated! Thanks.
