Jeff Busby and I drove up this past weekend for some camping and trout fishing. Lots and lots of snow still on the ground. Fishing was good but very, very cold. Drove up in some of the old forest service roads. Got me thinking that would be a great outing for the club (the roads have some great views. not much wheeling but hey we are supposed to be for every cruiserhead not just the offroad fanatics), but they have lots of trout for the fly fishermen in the group. Y'all think on it.
Peace.

Yeah and it would make for a good camping trip....back in Charleston when I was in Scouts, pisgah used to be our annual big camping trip. They've got a ton of campsites with water and bathrooms. Would make for a good overnight family camping adventure. Plus like ya say Travis...there are some spectacular views and all the trout fishin in the world.

I'm down. We were up there last weekend doing just that when we went backpacking. Some decent exploring that could be done up there and the National Geographic maps cover it pretty well.

I did a long mountain bike ride on the Mills River side and there is still a fair amount of snow up top and on anything north facing. Absolutely beautiful!

So does this mean you will come out on a ride?

I'm up for mtn bikin it too!! I've never made it up to Pisgah for a riding for whatever reason. Isaqueena's just too convenient to go out any further, I reckon.

Mtn Biking! Now we are talking!

As my handle indicates, I use to live in a cabin on a FS road in Pisgah. My favorite MTB ride is in the Davidson River area, and there is a group campsite (reservable) right on the MTB trail. To get to the campsite, there is a river crossing.

The trail is called Caney Bottoms, and its a 3 mile climb on FS roads, followed by 6 miles of singletrack downhill. For dessert, there is about a mile of whop-de-doos (hydraulics) next to Davidson River. I call it the "most bang for the buck" trail. This is all in the fish hatchery area.

Now, there is also a whole lot of dirt FS roads winding through there. While not "wheeling," I am sure that most members would find it enjoyable. Lots of good fishing along the Davidson.

Ok, this is a project I can sink my teeth into!

Okay president...... you just signedyourself up for this one!!! How about a BEAT the HEAT weekend in Pisgah this coming Summer??? I think our schedule is full until June or July and June may already be taken with CC's invitaition. But I like the idea of a club camping trip that can offer it all; mountain biking, trout fishing, hiking, and some easy senic trail rides!!! What say ye??? Want to take this one under your wings :D

I'd be up for some mountain biking....... my favorite trail is right their at the entrance to pisgah at the Davidson river; right across from Sycamore flats camp ground it is straight up the first mile and half but then the endless stretch of down hill whoop-de-doos is totally worth it

lets make this happen!!!

I WILL TAKE THE LEAD ON THIS ONE. The trail you are refering to is called Black Mtn. trail (not to be confused with the town of Black Mtn.) Nice trail, but very serious both up and down. Like all things in my life, I can lead a MTB trip on the very MODERATE Caney Bottoms trail. It is just the best trail I know!

I am thinking we reserve the group campsite at Caney Bottoms if possible, just past the Fish Hatchery. This group campsite is huge, and last time I stayed it had both water and toilets. I don't know if it has showers yet. The group campsite is located on a trout stream that feeds into the Davidson.

June is looking good, but this campsite is very popular, so I will need to check with the USFS for an open date.

David from what I can tell online it looks like nothing is availabe. Don't know if you can pull some strings.:grinpimp:

Yep, "Briar Bottoms" is the primo group campsite in the area, and it appears to be booked up the entire summer. I will now go to "Plan B" and see if I can find a private farm or campground nearby, OR call in some favors . . . . .

If I can't get Pisgah, how does the MTB crowd & dirt road crowd feel about TSALI? Lots of excellent MTB ~~~~~(Fontana Lake, NOC for rafting, GSMR (railroad), etc.)

TSALI = AWESOME
DO IT!!!

Tsali is always a lot of fun....There is also the Bent Creek area or Dupont. If you stay in Davidson River or Mills River all of these are fairly close by. Typically as far as climbing and technical trails, from hardest to easiest: Pisgah, Mills River, Dupont, Tsali, and then Bent Creek.
