There is an ugly old Pinzgauer truck for sale locally, and it has portal axles.... but they appear to be independent suspension. There is a differential in the middle, then half shafts that go out to the portal boxes. Anyone ever seen anything like this? I didn't have the digital camera with me when I stopped to look at it- so yes, I know this thread is worthless without pictures. I've seen unimog axles, volvo axles, etc, but these I've never seen. Thanks, Luke

The Pinzgauer is an amazing bit of technology considering it was first designed in the 60s. Over the years it has developed to include modern advances. Now mad in the UK it is much sort after by the Worlds military and makes a wonderful expedition truck. The original designer came from the works that designed the Tatra Truck which uses very similar design.

The Pinzgauer is my fav truck full stop. I would trade my 80 in for a deposit for a 718 6x6.

I think if you could adapt the drop boxes to a pair of solid axles, you'd have a decent setup, but you're reaching the high end of the scale on a Pinz with 36s- bigger tires just don't fit that well. People don't typically rock crawl with them either, so who knows (someone does) where the threshold lies when it comes to broken parts.

That said, good luck!

My buddy had a miniature pinz it was called a halflinger

2cyl vwstyle rear engine and diff locks it even had the portals on it

man that thing was sweet

i got to ride in butch lewis's pinz and it was a blast. modifying that running gear into another rig would be a nightmare and they're not exactly freeway friendly.

I have both a Pinz and 2 Halflingers. The Pinz is no rock crawler at all. It is geared good but no wheel travel kills it. It is capable for what it is but not in a league of Cruisers. I have taken my Halflinger up trails that the big dogs run, but not without some acrobatics. Look at my pics at the link below. I don't have pics up of my white 68 Halflinger that I wheel but my 72 is there as well as my 79 Pinz.

i thought early pinz's and haflingers were made in austria?! just like mozart, adolph, arnold and me! :D

The early Pinzgauers were designed and built in Austria but the Newer much improved vehicles are now built in the UK They are a bigger and have more up to date equipment. The wheel travel is increased and they have disc (rotors) brakes all round. The power house is a 5 cylinder TDI VW Unit. My link earlier give more information
