LCers,

Getting close to putting the motor back in. Been traveling for the last year and been limited to the amount of time I can devote to my LC.

Clutch is in and of course used the alignment tool, and the pressure plate is oriented correctly to the flywheel. The Pilot bearing is sort of floating in the engine. When I did my jeep clutch (yes no comparison), I had to drive the pilot bearing in. This one fit's on the Transmission but sort of floats in the engine (I am assuming until the transmission spline is inserted). So before proceeding, my question:

Is this correct that the Pilot Bearing should float around in there? Not sure it is.

The outer race of that bearing must remain stationary for it to provide any use in that application. From what can be seen in the pic there is a tremendous amount of slop in the bearing bore. That bearing is going to be useless. The bore where the bearing sits is severely worn or someone went to town with a grinder maybe? removing an existing bearing?
The block can be bored for a larger (300 series) bearing or a sleeve can be machined to compensate for the slop depending on how worn it actually is-needs to be measured to be determined.:meh:

Thanks, I questioned the bearing when I got it. I have a micrometer and will measure the outer and inner diameter. Any suggestions on How I can get just a bearing? I don't want to buy another clutch kit just for the bearing. I am going to see if I still have the old one..

Argh!

Any Power transmission/bearing supply house-local to you or online can provide a direct replacement KOYO bearing. The bearing you have now should be a 6202 zz if my memeory is correct :) no guarantee on that though.

Actually, I do not recall pulling out a Pilot Bearing and it is not next to my old through-out bearing. I must have left it in when I had the engine done, or maybe it wasn't there. I can't imagine not having a pilot bearing and not feeling any vibration when I would drive it around the block. Yet another reason to call the machine shop to confirm that they pulled the pilot bearing. Any idea what OD and ID for the bearing is? Like I said, I have to take the clutch out anyhow but was hoping to confirm.

Maybe, I just take the bearing and OD of the engine block and have a sleeve made.

Thanks 71FFJ40

Perfect, I will research and take some measurements. Your message came at the same time I was typing...

Closing the thread. Resolved. Since I don't recall pulling the bearing, checked and wella. Duh it is still there. Pulled it and replaced. Engine going in within a few days. Thanks 71FFJ40
