Roof Rack Feet

These are done. I think I will try some RTV on the seal. Thanks for the suggestion ;p

*Finished Roof Rack

I'll prolly add some type of removable mesh later if needed. The tire will be chained down in the center of the "A" as I didn't want to add any more useless weight fabbin up a wheel mounting bracket.

As much as I have ribbed you in the past about the weight of this thing, I don't think I would stop now and go skimping on a large weight up top. You already have the huge spare up there, and the last thing I would want is something shifting around up there on a chain. How about just a single "stud" that threads down on one lugnut hole Better yet, just weld a small plate with a 1/2" nut welded on it to the center of the rack. Take a piece of threaded rod with a round plate and a Y welded on the other end and just thread it down tight on there.

Chained down will be sufficent. I could move the spare to the top of the cargo cage if I need to carry more junk on the rack so no permanent mount will be fabbed ;p I will need to decide how to mount my Hi-Lift & multi purpose axe via brackets.....

Winding Down On This Build

I have a few big items to finish up:
1 - Locate inner axle seals
2 - Exhaust
3 - Locate hydro-assist & build brackets

I have to get the axleshafts cut, splined & installed before I can install the hydro ram. That'll enable me to find out how much steering travel I have so I can position the ram correctly. Here, I'm using 2 pieces of 1 1/2" X 1/4" wall DOM w/ an inner press fitted sleeve for alignment. The bars extend all the way out thru the spindles.

Inner seals are tacked in & I sealed the plates w/ POR Patch, let dry, then painted w/ POR15. Hope the gear lube doesn't break down that stuff. I have the measurements taken down for the inner axles so I'll be calling around Monday to find a local shop to perform the machinework. Currently, I'm laying out the exhaust & will start welding it up this week.

So does this mean you will be taking the pig to GSMTR???

I have a bunch of smaller items to finish or start. Still needs driveshafts, windshield installed, gotta buy another Detroit for the new 4.88's in the rear & resetup gears, will get total rewire job, hafta break down the 8274 & install new outer elec. studs & inspect inners, buy a CB/ antenna & install both, get all hydro lines, seat covers & a few more things I didn't account for. I'll need some seat/ trail time before I hit the big stuff to work out any bugs :meh: So, I doubt it'll be ready by then :frown: You making the drive?

Dude I would love too but I don't see it happening this yr:doh:!!!

I'm asking b/c I can't wait to see some wheel'n pics of this thang!!!:bounce::D:popcorn:

I'll be sending my shafts to Hudlow Axle in Rossville Ga., since I don't think anyone local can touch $55.00 to spline a shaft. I didn't take into account the machine shops I contacted were going to charge me a setup fee  They basically told me it wouldn't be cost effective to spline 2 shafts but rather do a production run of many shafts. Therefore, they suggested I look for a shop that's already setup & specializes in small jobs. Oh well that's what I learnt today :meh: While the shafts are sent out, I'm moving over to the 40 cuz I have some frontend work that needs attention. When the shafts arrive, I reassemble the front axle & knock out those hydro ram mounts.

Good & Bad News:

Got my shafts in, but the short one is too short  I measured these things for 30 min & double & triple checked. I wrote them down & sent a detailed diagram for the machinework. I even confirmed the dimensions w/ one of the guys at the shop  I have the sheet at work, so I'll see what I wrote down & compare. Looks like I'm staying at work on the 40 till I get another blank sent to them & redone :meh: That's just how things went today. I wanna do over :frown:

<EDIT> No doubt about it, I reread the dimensions & messed it all up. Who has that Red Foreman "dumbass" pic?

 I hate it when I do dumb sh*t like that! Glad to see I'm not the only one:D.

The smaller one'll be used for an outer if I decide to do the 35 spline stubs, so it's not really a loss, just a little setback. I haven't ordered another yet :meh:. I'm at the stage where I have to spend ca$h to get parts. Not like I can keep on doing stuff, laborwise, or use things I already have here that's already paid for or free. Plus both tow rigs are f'n up & I gotta have those fixed first :bang:

Revised Axle Panhard

:skull: The thread from the dead has been revived :skull:
After some thought & reviewing other front link setups, I figured I should relocate the panhard to the opposite side. So, the frame mount will be below the steering box. I'm also relocating where the brakeline drops from the body. I'll run it along the firewall & it'll connect to the top of the axle housing via a long braided hose. I'm kinda goin back & forth from the 40 so I haven't been slackin much in the fab dept. :meh:
