I'm looking for pictures of the cargo area stripped out. I have seen some good pictures before, but I don't remember who has the good pics.
I'd like to be able to see the reinforcements in the cargo area from the rear doors to the back. I'm working up ideas for a roof rack that isn't mounted to the gutters or the top of the roof.

I know its weird and there are other options, but let's not gum up the thread with suggestions for gutter mounts. I already know I don't want them. I live in Michigan and gutter mounts are just asking for rust. My plan is to have a local guy weld to the body in a reinforced area. Blasphemous, I know, but I feel like if it is executed properly, it won't be an issue.

For specificity, you want pictures of the roof with the headliner removed, right?

Here is a pic of the inside of my '97 FZJ80 with everything removed but the headliner...

what? why? gutter mounts work just fine.... To take your headliner down, you'll need to remove the rear window sliders which isn't that bad. You can see whats what pretty easy. Open up the sliders half way, both of them, stick a large flat head screw driver in the corner, work it thru, have a friend help pull the window out from the outside. Its scary how easy they come out...

A "roll cage mounted" roof rack is just a mess due to body and frame flex

I have my interior out at the moment except for the drivers seat and headliner, but it looks no different than the pic from Mtbcoach. I do have entire lower rear PS quarter cut out from a donor vehicle sitting at my place. I can take some pics of the C and D pillar cross sections if you want.

Stripper interior?

Not sure if this is a Land Cruiser though.

@canman that would be great if you don't mind

@Mtbcoach thanks for the pics, I'm looking for a completely bare interior. Someone here had a thread with the pictures, but I can't remember who.

@Duiser Offroad I'm trying to avoid stripping my interior right now. My truck is in enough pieces in the garage... also, gutter mounts are just asking for rust up here and I don't want to deal with that.

@ChiTown The idea will be to add even more reinforcement tied into the structure of the body. I gave up on trying to make a cage mounted rack because i didn't like the way it looked.

I also have drawings for the body, but it also helps to have pictures of what you're actually looking at. I'm going to be working with a body engineer at work for more help in figuring out how to tie in something sturdy.

Thanks fellas!

I recall that you might be in the "industry" but still don't think unless you are planning a full exo rack that the effort gains you much for strength and rust defense. Why not remove and seal any holes from the OEM rack and then Monstaliner the roof including the gutters then build a rack to suite with 3- 5 pair of feet if needed. I used small sections of epdm roofing to isolate the grippers on both my arb rack and the current Labrak version.

But then you may have a vision that just needs to be pioneered !

i'm confused...you're looking for a stripped cargo area and that's what he posted. what do you mean by "completely bare interior"? are you looking for roof shots?

thanks, @nuclearlemon
MTBCoach still had the headliner and pillar trim.

What are you doing to yours?
Is that mud/dust in the right rear quarter? are your rear quarters rusted through too?

Here is my 97 LX completely stripped. Tell me what more details you want. I can take more pics on Friday.

I have no idea how to add the pics inline so here you go.

that's mud...the rust is down lower...it's being parted out

The area just inside of the gutter is a reinforced area and if you don't want gutter mounts just mod flat metal pads and weld them just inside of the gutters

I'm not following why the gutter rails would be asking for rust?

I've had my baja rack attached to gutters for a couple of winters with no signs of rust showing up, everything is painted, the mounts have a rubber base that protects the paint on the gutters and the mounts so I don't get where the concern is.

Sorry for the highjack.

Here are the pics. I hope it helps with what you want to do.

@canman those are great! thanks!
Your avatar shows you're from Quebec, but those parts are from Panama(from the license plate in the pic)... You even have the reinforcements for the Steps/swing-out carrier...Nice!

What are you up to with those panels?

I picked the plate up 4 or 5 years ago when we vacationed there. The parts are from a JDM vehicle that my buddy parted out. I'm going to use that panel to patch up some rust around my rear window if needed and the lower quarter panel. It was a shame to cut up a Land Cruiser though.

Im also planing of stripping my headliner, are these shots from the old or new headliners? I think from 92 onwards they updated the headliners, im planing to do the same on my 91.
Does anyone know if the updated version fits the older 80 series model??
