Driving 20-25 MPH above the speed limit is rediciulous and dangerous. What gives you the right to drive at those speeds?

Speed limits are not set for safety in mind, though they are sold like that. I would be happy to account to you in person someday my experiences in working in traffic (de-)optimization. There is clearly an unsafe speed, but that changes drastically in conditions and driver and vehicle &c.

I'll chime back in here quickly in Kurtis' deffense (not that it will really matter). I agree that traffic cams are bull**** and will go as far as to say that posted limits on Hiways are also BULL****. Are German/Austrian drivers really that much more skilled at driving than US drivers, that they can jump onto a hiway with no posted limit and haul ass without dying. I guess they are...

Like Kurtis, I often drive over the posted limit. I'd go as far as to say I drive above the posted limit more than I drive at or below the posted limit. Most of that speeding is within 10 mph of the posted limit on roads with a SL of 45-65mph. School zones and residential areas being the exception for me as I am very sensative about the safety of children in and around places where they will be playing and hanging around. But on the open hiway (traffic and weather permitting) I often drive 20+ mph above the posted limit.

Fully expecting the wrath of "Captain Road Safety", I will even admit to driving well into triple digits on open hiway on many occasions, and will likely continue to do so. All of this "extreme" speeding is of course done with discretion and never in congested or inclement conditions. But the truth is I LOVE to drive. It's that simple. I am confident that my skillset on the road is above average and I can handle my vehicles at high speeds on the roads I drive. The biggest uncontrolable factor is other drivers and their lack of skill and training. How often are you forced to pass on the right (wrong) side of a slow moving vehicle because they either do not see you approaching in the left lane or they simply refuse to do the proper thing and move to the right allowing you to overtake them, at any speed? Think about it...

*I think traffic cams are money makers as well

*I think you are fooling yourself if you think driving at triple digits is safe. And don't give me the Autobahn crap...folks die there daily. Crap happens...animals running across the road, tires...even new ones can be defective...no need to go into detail...crap happens.

Driving 20-25MPH over the SL is frickin dumb-ass. Sorry. No excuses. There's a million stories out there where drivers "who thought" they knew what they were doing crashed and hurt or killed other folks and/or themselves. If they themselves died that's too bad though they asked for it (just like Michael Jackson did...he's no hero...far from it).

Damn, even this thread wasnt safe from the "Michael Jackson saturation" factor....:D

Yep... s*** happens. Bit my tounge the other day at lunch. Man was I pissed. Triple digits speeds are perfectly safe, as long as the equipment and operator are up to the task, and road conditions are optimal.

You are that dude that made his kid wear a helmet to play in the sandbox aren't ya? Life happens brother. So does death. I ate a potato chip off the ground yesterday.

Nothing to worry about if you observed the 5 sec rule.

Nah... I just saw it sittin there. Who knows how long it was there. Days, weeks, months... not real sure.

Then I see it as a bad example for the youngster reading your post.....You know what some say first its the potato chip next thing you know they are speeding:eek:

Come to think about it I ate a live crayfish and a couple ants yesterday maybe thats why I went 80mph home pulling a popup:popcorn:

People die here too, John. Everyday. But people die less there. The Autobahn is one of the safest highway systems in the world. When you have higher-level training, top-rate road maintenance, and strict adherence to and enforcement of other traffic laws you can travel at very high speeds safely.

The problem we have here isn't people speeding. The problem here is the poor maintenance of our interstate system, drivers who have very little training, vehicles that are poorly designed and unsafe, and law enforcement officers that do not enforce laws that would keep our roads more safe. When was the last time you heard of someone getting a ticket for passing on the right?

It can be unsafe to speed, but it isn't speed itself that is unsafe.

Spin it anyhow you want...driving 20-25MPH above the posted limits is plain stupid.

hey, its my thought that most people can drive ok. they just really cant multie task ... and thats when trouble starts:steer:

No doubt. its not even the speed that concerns me as much as its the people every morning on the way to work on the 51 that are: reading the paper, talking on the cell, putting on makeup, and friggin' texting!:censor:

unbelievable. Its a wonder that more people dont crash and burn.

I am agreeing completely as I read this thread on my blackberry while driving on I-95, eating leftover potstickers and speeding - people just need to focus on the road more.

This part.

The speed I'm talking about in topic is 20-25MPH over the posted limit. I understand your points above though I read "excuses" above for the behavior. I could be reading wrong. :)
