I am agreeing completely as I read this thread on my blackberry while driving on I-95, eating leftover potstickers and speeding - people just need to focus on the road more.
:hillbilly:

Careful, Josh - don't spill your beer.
I'm suprised since we have gone over most of the road hazards out there we missed the drunk drivers. Mathematically stated:
(+:steer:)*:whoops: = :skull:

And boy do I agree. The cell phone and texting bull has got to stop.

That's part of it, but the problem is much deeper. Some countries see driving for what it is, one of the most dangerous things that you will ever do and train their their drivers with that in mind. They see driving as a privilege.

Americans see driving as an entitlement and a chore that they must do. They must be entertained while doing it, playing with nav, sound, movie, systems and all of the other toys in their tuna boats, eating, etc,,, oh and holding on to the steering wheel.

You can be just as dead from a 25mph accident as a triple digit one and 25mph accidents are much more common. I'm more comfortable sharing the road with a triple digit driver who is up on the wheel, aware of the conditions, etc, than a steering wheel holder going any speed. Unfortunately steering wheel holders are way too common.:o

Americans are all hung up on vehicle safety, driver aid systems, driving land yachts, so when they plow into something there is a chance of surviving. IMHO $$$ would be better spent converting steering wheel holders into drivers, any accident avoided is much safer than any accident that happens. Most Americans have no concept of on the edge vehicle control and a panic situation isn't the time to learn.

Arizona is pretty bad as 16 year olds don't even need drivers ed here and most parents don't even take the time to teach the children how to drive. When i drove with my wife the first time I realized this all to quickly. She is a great driver as far as reaction time, , but the common things I leanred in drivers ed she had no idea. For example I was taught you only use the left lane for passing, you stay as close to the right side line as safely possible when you approach another car you turn off the bright lights, you don't tailgate, you brake with plenty of time before a stop, you always look ahead a few seconds and when on the freeway you attempt to maintain a consistent speed. One trip with my wife and it was evident why they need drivers ed. I'm fine with driving at 16, but they defiantly should learn some of the tips before hand. O well though Napolitano thought all day kindergarten and more money for Michael Crow to blow on random crap just to use up the money was more important than drivers ed. Glad shes gone but disgusted as a reward for a 2 billion dollar budget shortfall she somehow ended up as the Home Land security director.

hey i learned to drive at 12 years old in a 72 jeep c10 pickup, it took me almost that whole summer to realize that when grandpa opened that beer you drove slow. then the more he tipped the beer up the faster you could go . NOW keep in mind we were going wood cutting and on forest roads in the middle of nowhere!!!:hillbilly:( a twelve year old will fill that truck with wood if he gets to drive that truck to an fro)

Napolitano thought all day kindergarten

Come on now, we need to have kids in school as EARLY and OFTEN as possible. We need to be educating our kids much earlier than 5yo, maybe even put them in school full-time like at 2? Homework too, have you seen how little homework they're giving out now in Kindergarten?

Time at home learning "import life lessons" with sad ol' mom and dad is a dated excuse. Also outdated is the concept that children need daytime sleep. Our country doesn't have time for this and our health-care system is sufficient to handle the childhood physiological stress. We need TOP performers and the only way to do that is to stretch education budgets to their very thinnest, pack the classrooms with young children.

FIRST thing is to keep the parents married.

Why not trade in for a newer model every 5 years or 75000 miles?:grinpimp:

By that logic, I am three years overdue for a trip to the dealership...

LMAO too :) I've got a few more miles on here than age though. Will the gub'mt give me cash for trade-in to a newer more efficient (spend less) model?

Like "Cash for Clunkers", "Jack for Junkers", "Pennies for :princess:" - your choice...~ Lets spend the free gub.mt money!

Pssst....its YOUR money.....:hhmm:

Actually its 53 % of Americans money 47% pays no income tax. I'm willing to bet the next few levels pay almost nothing as well. No wonder all these programs get passed. I'd love free health care to if I knew I wouldn never have to pay for it. Actually I wouldn't I hate handouts they make you feel like a worthless piece of crap. Wars don't sound to bad either as long as you don't have to go.

Thats just the thing, your "Trade In" will probabaly be more efficient to keep then to get rid of for one of the new, perky, shiny, off the production line versions nowadays...you know what they say "Cheaper to Keeper":grinpimp:

... and friggin' texting!:censor: ...

Another great American steering wheel holder.

NYTimes.com said:
About half of drivers 16 to 24 said they had texted while driving, compared with 22 percent of drivers 35 to 44.

“It’s convenient,” said Robert Smith, 22, a recent college graduate in Windham, Me. He says he regularly texts and drives even though he recognizes that it is a serious risk. He would rather text, he said, than take time on a phone call.

“I put the phone on top of the steering wheel and text with both thumbs,” he said, adding that he often has exchanges of 10 messages or more. Sometimes, “I’ll look up and realize there’s a car sitting there and swerve around it.”

Since the Virginia Tech article you mentioned came out, it spurred a Federal push to ban texting nationwide. See here:
