I am planning on getting a pertronix ignitor and coil to replace my points. My question is has anyone used the Ignitor II and the FlameThrower II coils. I'll probably just get the Ignitor and FlameThrower coil, not the II. Just wondering if anyone used the II and found it much better than the original.

The main differece is the "overheat" function... The II will not burn up the ignitor like the I kit would when the key is left on for extended periods...

The Ignitor II senses current levels in the coil and adjusts the dwell to maintain
peak energy throughout the entire RPM range. Dwell angle is increased or
decreased with changing engine RPM and operating conditions. This provides
more energy at high RPM, reducing misfires while improving engine
performance.
Compared to point-type systems, develops on average 4 times more available
energy between 3000 and 5000 RPM, and 2 times more available plug voltage.
Compared to the original Ignitor, develops on average 3 times more available
energy between 3000 and 5000 RPM, and nearly doubles available plug voltage.
Higher RPM performance is improved when used with the new Flame-Thrower® II
super low resistance (0.6 ohms) 45,000 volt coil. Also compatible with other coils.
Peak current level is reached just prior to spark, so ignition energy is sustained
with less heat build-up, increasing coil and module life.
Adjusts spark timing over the entire RPM range to compensate for the inherent
electronic delay, resulting in more stable timing.
Senses engine startup and increases dwell time, providing more energy
for starting.
Senses incorrectly wired Ignitor II or a “key left on” condition and shuts down the
system, protecting the module, coil and other components from damage.
Temperature Range: -50° to 300° F.
RPM Range: 0 to 15,000 RPM.
Compatible with 12-volt negative ground systems.
Legal in all 50 states and Canada (C.A.R.B. E.O. #D-57-2).
Guaranteed for 30 months...We Stand Behind It!

I still havn't been able to get one of these in stock, they are BO'd as per my vendor.

I just put a pertronix ingitor in my 40 and love it, but a quick SEARCH could of told you about them.

i searched but didn't come up with anything comparing the two different ignitors. I'm glad I haven't heard much bad about the Pertronix ignitor. I believe its a lot cheaper than finder a later model dist.

thanks for the info Kurt. I may have to call Pertronix and go straight through them.

the old style is $70 the new one is about 2x's

New question: Has anyone ever had a problem with the original pertronix? According to Kurt, the new one won't burn up. I can appreciate some more resistance to burning up, but has anyone ever had an old one burn up?

I haven't. I love what mine did for a 40-year old wobbly distributor shaft. It's been in for 3 or 4 years with no issues. I did not get a flamethrower coil.

I have replaced two, and both were casued by a key left on for a long time (long enough to drain the battery)... But, I wouldn'y hesitate to run one myself as their are hundreds of them in service out there. :D

I just bought one from Kurt and I love it!! Kurt was also very cool with helping me make sure everything was installed right.

I put one of the PII's in a 1970 postal Jeep. The Jeep had a 134 Chevy engine. Drops in in 5-10 minutes. A very good upgrade to points. They even have them for my 1950 Farmall C tractor.

I just installed one in a new non usa distributor install was easy and took only 10 minutes. I am still trying to figure out if I need to install a resister/condensor with the flame thrower coil though..

Glad I could help :D

Steel-
If you are using the Flamethrower coil, you do not need the resistor. I have been running mine that way for 2 years. I think it says someting about it in the instructions.

FWIW you can burn up a stock ignition by leaving the key to run without it running.

Yup, ignitors don't make a great heat sink... :D

A friend gave me one of the Ignitor II units for Christmas (model #1665). I tried to install it in the "non-USA" ditributor on my '77 but it does not fit. I checked several other postings on this site and found that some people modified the units to get them to fit. Since I don't want to modify the Pertronix unit, I returned it. Unless someone else has an idea, there is no fit for the early or "non-USA" distributors. :(

the #1665 is not the ignitor II but rather the ignitor I i put this in a 63' dizzy this weekend and had no problems at all. I was under the impression that a E-67' dizzy is the same as a "NON-USA"

Well for some reason, the non-USA that I got wouldn't accomodate the 1665. I dunno??? It was very frustrating to say the least.

I`ve been runnin` a Igniter 1 for about 2 years,no problems.Did manage to burn up the Ignitor coil though,(there`s a story to that).
If anyone needs an Ignitor II I`ve got one, brand new in the box.Ordered wrong one.

I'm kinda of an idiot when it comes to this stuff. What is the difference between a Pertronix ignition and this ignition set up shadyoutfitters sells?

http://jtoutfitters.com/product/MELSKIT

Is this similiar, just a different brand? Or same thing? Or something totally different? Why do you need a coil if the stock one is working, or maybe you don't?

I have a freshly rebuilt stock 2F that runs pretty good, I was thinking that something like this might pick it up on the bottom end of all the gears, seems a bit sluggish?

Thanks, Matt
