I've had my '99 LC for two years now. The paint was in pretty good shape when I got it, but two years in the baking LA sun (I park it outside) is causing some serious clear-coat flaking. It seems to be deteriorating more quickly now. I'm a newbie at car paint... does it seem like the flaking is just the clear coat or do you think something else is going on?

The hood had a couple of spots when I got it, so I added a hood blackout wrap from Crawlorado. Best $89 I've spent on the LC.

The roof and roof rack look pretty bad though.

I just washed it and you can see new flakes all over the place.

And the front bumper looks pretty bad now too.

I've found threads on how to repaint the rack itself, but I'm looking for advice on what to do with the roof and potentially the hood and front bumper. The sides are in really good shape.

I'd like to avoid further deterioration and damage. It seems like my options are:
  • Vinyl wrap the roof too, and perhaps do a full hood wrap while I'm at it
  • Do a "800-1000-1500-2000 grit sandpaper" sand down on the roof, then hit it with a 2K clear coat
  • Have a pro repaint the roof and hood (will it match the rest?) or perhaps the whole thing
Sadly, the LC stays on road most of the time, but at least that means the sides are in good shape. I'd like to maintain the resale value so I don't think I want to Monstaline it.

I'd appreciate any thoughts or advice.

@kelly saad is doing single stage paint resprays, might be worth getting in touch with him?

Single stage would mean a re-spray of the whole truck using non-metallic paint.

Right and the OP indicated he was considering all options including painting parts of the truck or
perhaps the whole thing

If going with a full respray, single stage would preclude a future clear coat failure. Simply an option to consider.

Yeah but single stage has its own share of issues. Typically much softer paint and oxidizes and looks dull, especially on a vehicle that sees a lot of sun exposure. Easier to touchup and paint match but it’s not all rainbows and unicorns. There’s a reason you don’t see single stage being used on 99.9% of new cars. I’ve corrected hundreds of single stage paints in my business, typically old rare Porsches. I love them but it wouldn’t be my first choice for an outdoor vehicle.

Metallic has to be base/clear. You can’t sand the clear off and spray clear because you will mess up the metallic base coat by sanding into it. You could try if you aren’t to picky, and it’s on the roof, maybe it will look ok.
The single stage paint is just what I like personally. I shoot my vehicles with it, and I take very good care of my paint usually, so I don’t have any issues. I do not care for metallic paint, it’s just my opinion, so I use single stage on my non metallic paint jobs for my vehicles. I will shoot whatever anyone wants though. Base/clear is easier to shoot, but a little bit more $$.

I’m no expert though, I’m just Kelly. :)

If I wanted to keep it near stock for resale, I think my cheapest option would be to have a shop repaint the peeling areas, and then wax everything monthly with uv protecting wax. But the areas with original paint will still eventually peel the clear coat anyway.

I too, am no expert.

My buddy Mike Richter paid someone locally to Spray the truck with PLastidip, and it came out great. Vinyl wrap is a great option as well, but those aside- repaint or clear coat spray is your only other option. Besides that, just embrace it and 4x4 the crap out of it.

I meant the base of the roof rack... the squiggly line. What is that?

Grumble. Good catch. I’ll check it out in the daylight.
