I have researched several sbc threads but still am not exact on what parts I will need? I have a 71' Fj40 with 6cyl. engine and a sm420 tranny and stock transfer case. I asm looking to install a 350 and still use the sm420. please help. ;)

You should try to find the stk bellhousing w/the bearing fork, for the SM420 to chevy motor. It is a little different than the later model GM bellhousings. I sure there are other ways to skin this cat if you can't find 1, I just am not familiar w/other alternatives. Then you need an adapter for the trans to tcase.
AA is a good source or maybe someone has or is still making a plate adapter for the sm420 to 3 speed case adapter, which keeps the Trans/tcase assembly shorter.

Howdy! I think what your looking for is the older cast iron bellhousing from the 60's Chevy pickup trucks. You'll need just stock clutch disk and pressure plate from any parts supplier. Motor mounts, other small bits, and instructions are available from several vendors, such as AA, SOR, and Manafre. I still have an extra one of the bellhouslings. Where are you located? John

Great info! I am located in Fresno CA.

Will I need a new radiator? Im thinking if so that its going to be one of the more expensive parts??

Howdy! In Wyoming, my stock radiator was fine for the stocker 250 hp 350 I used on my 72 FJ40. In Arizona, I put nearly the same engine in my FJ55, but the cooling was marginal in the summer. I opted for a FlowKooler water pump on the engine, and I replaced the core on the radiator with a high density unit. Works fine now. Do a search on cooling and radiators, and you will find volumes of info and discussion on this subject. There are a lot of other options. John

You left Wyoming to go to AZ, what were you thinking???
It was a tuff call. I loved the outdoors: hunt fish, prospect, hike, camp, 4x4, whatever. Lots of it. But I was dead ended career wise, and I had 3 preschoolers to consider. Now I hunt rocks in Arizona. Some to drive on, some to sell, and some to play with. John

Hey, I'm in Fresno and I did my conversion a couple of years ago. I have a stock 86 chev 350 with hei and a 2bbl holley carb, sm420 mated to the yota xfer case. If you need pics, part numbers, reference, help, just let me know.

I think the hardest part was getting the freaking bellhousing. Definitely get a cast iron one!

The stock radiator decided to take a dump after a few months with the 350. I ended up getting an aluminum one from summit if i recall. It was not the most expensive part...but like ppl have said, the stock radiator if it is in "good shape" will be fine. Many of the cooling problems ppl have is from not having the proper fan, space from radiator-to-fan, and a fan shroud, which is often over looked and extremely helpful.

Anyways...you got a couple of months of good wheeling weather, start collecting parts and yank that old motor out in October when the weather starts getting poopy.

What you need to get started is:
1.Complete longblock motor-you said you got it
2.The sm420 and yota xfer with adapter-looks like you already have that mated to your f motor and running now...
4.Engine and tranny mount-got mine from Advance Adapters
5.Bellhousing
6.New Clutch
7.Some metal to make a bracket to hold the clutch cylinder (must relocate)
8.Time, tools, extra money for random things that you will encounter, beer, and a swift kick in the nuts to get started!
