How did the fridge/freezer hold up over the trip? How big was yours too?

Also, I assume you used the truck for power...what did you to at night? Let it get warm, then restart in the AM?

Me thinks an ARB Fridge will be a MUSt for August..

I have the Engel 35. For me it's just fine. I borrowed a fellow HDC members Engel last trip. His was a 45, and it was too tall. I couldn't open the lid in the truck to get anything out.

I run the cooler on "2" during the day, then back it off to "1" or lower at night. I only have one battery, and it was a concern. I didn't have any problem with the cooler draining the battery. I'll be installing a small battery just for accessories before my next trip.

2= ~28°F
1= ~40°F

That's really good to know. Thanks Pappy. I'm gonna opt for the larger just for more cold ones.

After some reasearch, the only difference in the ARB to Engle is the ARB has the digital thermometer and some cosmetic differences but that's it. Both units only draw 2.7 amperes per hour at max and as low as .7 at the lowest setting...very efficient. May opt for the travel case for it too..

Dual battery time...for sure. Also, what GPS are you running? Did you find that you needed a paper map too?

I've carried the smaller engel on those trips, and was very happy. The smaller engel fits 6 six packs of tecate. so if you rotate through them consciously, there is always one at the optimal drinking temperature
even with a single battery there is no problem. Also, letting the truck idle for 25 minutes at 1200 rpm effectively recharges the battery almost completely after a day of cooling beer.

You should bring a map. Although www.lbmaps.com makes a great mapping software for Baja.

You'll want to try and find a Baja Almanac. I have heard they are out of print, but you might be able to find one somewhere. Or AAA makes a great Baja map. Not all the detail of the Almanac but definitely worth it.

I'll have to look at that link closer after work. I ordered the Lowrance BAJA 540 C unit today for the rig...see if they have software for that Lowrance Unit or maybe Lowrance provides it already..


Baja Almanac is out of print...Will find something suitable..

I use a 30 watt solar panel and leave the fridge on 2 (45 quart engel). You will have all the sun you will need. My battery will stay at 12.8 to 13.0 volts all day. Inside car temps getting in the 130's. Solar works very well in baja.

I have the basic Garmin GPS 60. Wish I bought the GPS 60CSx. I use a 12v adapter and a roof mount antenna. For the paper map I have a Baja Almanac, which has seen better days. Sure hope it gets reprinted soon. I ordered a new one in April 06, and it's still out of print.

Heading down on the 17th Maybe we will cross paths. Taking 1 to BOLA then south on the 1000 course to the El Barril turn off. Wont be going by Coco's.
