For an aftermarket rollcage, like Metal-tech's, how did you finish it? Meaning, did you rattle can it or have it powder coated or ??? I'm not going to use rollbar padding and just using tape on the cage seems like it wouldn't prevent rust.

For sliders, which are going to be seeing a lot of contact with rocks, again, how did you finish them? I would think powder coating would be out because it would get scraped off and can't be replaced. So did you rattle can them? Any special type of paint that holds up well to abuse?

Thanks

I have a metal tech roll bar, and I primered and rattle canned it. I figured rattle can black is cheap and is easy to touch up if I scratch it. I also know that people have powder coated them. I've also heard people use bed liner (i.e. linex, etc.) on roll bars for more protection. But, like I said, a rattle can is cheap and easily touched up.

Good luck!

I have done the same thing - spray paint them. Most of the heavy duty stuff works well, but I don't go crazy, especially with the sliders, cause I haven't seen paint yet that holds up well between a slider and a rock...

I like the Rustoleum Satin black. Wipe the piece down with metal prep and paint. No need for primer. Like Freak said, touches up nicely.

I like the 'hammered' finish rattle can paint for sliders and stuff. Looks like crinkle powdercoat.

I just had my Metaltech cage powdercoated for 100 bucks CANADIAN!! Dropped it off Monday and it was done yesterday. It was definately worth the $100 and it gave me a chance to recoat my tub bed.
Pics when I pic it up later today.

Dupli-Color Wheel Paint

I've used Dupli-Color wheel paint (rattle can) on my roll cage & bumpers, and it seems to hold up pretty well to trail abuse. Exposed bare metal gets spot cleaned with mineral spirits and resprayed as needed.

I have linex on my bumpers, and will probably do the same for sliders when I either buy or build some. I like the texture for stepping on, and it's really tough. The sliders will probably get scraped up a bit eventually, but the rattle can duplicolor bedliner seems to touch up linex pretty good. I spray painted my roll bar, and all the paint is worn off the top from my bikini top. When I eventually get a metaltech I plan on painting it with the same urethane enamel I painted the truck with. It's way tougher than spray cans.

I used herculiner bed liner on my rollbar, like it and will do this again when I go with a metaltech cage later on. For the sliders, I used a product called hammerite, good stuff, can buy it at home depot and it works great for sliders and bumpers, goes on smooth and holds up really well.

I'll be getting the cage in my FJ40 coated with Line-X, when ever I get around to it, the sliders and bumper will be sprayed with ordinary auto paint.
