I was thinking about painting my fiberglass top black. My color scheme will be metallic orange with black hinges and black bezel, and figured a white top might not look the best.

I am concerned about scratches from trees and such so gloss black automotive paint is out of the question. Does anyone recomend a paint that is not glossy that will hold up well.

How do those aerosol bedliner paints hold up. The ones that have a sandy texture to them. I have access to profesional sprayers, so I am open to anything, not just DIY products.

I have not used the aerosole bed liner, but I have used a product that is role on, (Herculiner). I used it on both the front and rear bumpers on my Isuzu Amigo as well as the back storage area.
It worked great. I have had the entire weight of the Amigo on the bumpers on rocks with no damage to surfoce.

It goes on easy with roller so no overspray.

I purchased it at Checker, not to terably priced.

Only problems I have had is on bare mettale that was not preped well.

Hope this helps:)

The fiberglass top is supposed to be gelcoated- not painted.

I would try and find black marine gelcoat- (there are black fiberglass boats out there)

Do a search for bedliners. There are a few trucks out there that have the complete exterior done in liner, either sprayed or rolled. The better liners are tough stuff. I believe that Durabac has a liner that is smooth. The original Durabac has ground up rubber in it and is rough. It traps dirt. I used Durabac inside the tub. It sprays pretty good with a undercoating gun.

If you do Imron it...be very careful and wear a respirator. Imron is very dangerous stuff.

dude you can put anykind of paint or gelcoat on it dont know why someone said you can only gelcoat it.. HOWEVER if you have a spray gun and ENough air gel coat will be the toughest by FAR!!!

I Don't know man, I'd think twice about painting the roof black. Although I do think it looks cool, it's gotta be hot under those black heat traps....

I went to Lowes, got a paint roller, and some latex white paint. Went on great....the rattle can crap looked like s***. Mine is white:)

i think the white will still look good with the black hinges and orange paint. it's one of the things that separates it from.......you know......those "other" 4x4's.

I used the "Elastec" roof coating that I put on the roof of my house every other year. It goes on with a roller, and provides good heat reflection, its waterproof, and easy to maintain.

My personal opinion is to go with the white top...I've seen black tops, and they just don't look right...

I would also recommend gel-coat and buff....

black makes a baaad fj

If I had a stock cruiser the top would be white, however, my po used some thick high gloss coating and it looks good. I know he user por 15 on the bumpers and frame and maybe the roof. I used 2 coats of teflon marine wax and it rinses clean. good luck:beer:

I used an industrial epoxy floor paint for the wife’s horse trailer looked great not as expense as auto paint and tough a hell!!!

Paint It Black

I just had mine done, I used a flat black finish. The body shop called it suede black, it has a dull finish which has held up and does not scratch easily. If you go to the member photo gallery there are pictures of this under 1979 Black Betty under my user name. Any questions give me a shout, I would be happy to answer any questions.
