Painting coil springs?

Why do some aftermarket companies think that red or yellow springs look cool? Has anyone tried to paint coil springs with good long term results? If so, what paint works well? I'm concerned that the constant flexing of the spring will not be paint-friendly. How about those rubberized undercoating rattle cans?

I know powder coating may be an option, although it made me ask myself "Would the heat from curing process be detrimental to the spring?". It also costs more.

I had a pair of Superlift coils for my Dodge powder coated 7 years ago for ~100 bucks. Since then coils racked up ~150K miles with no flaking or rusting that I could see. They were still going strong when I sold the truck a couple of months ago.

I powdercoated all my springs as well as panhard rods and rear links. To me it looks way better "not seeing" that stuff. I had to paint my shocks as they cant be powdercoated. Everything is satin/semi-flat black. The heat has no effect during the powdercoating process.

No, I think you misread. I bought Skyjacker springs, and they are effin' RED. I want them black, like everything else under the truck. I hate polished and chrome stuff. Too cheesy for me. I also got Bilsteins and if I don't do something about both of them, I'm gonna look like a rolling McDonalds.

IIRC, yours is the first report that we have of someone using the Skyjacker springs. Please post up some stats on both the springs and the shocks.

Before and after height: (Measure from center of hub to bottom of fender flare) Weight rating of the springs for specified lift. (e.g. 2.5" lift with 300#) Number of coils, wire diameter, and any other specs you have.

We could use some objective comparisons to stock and to OME if you have a friend with the more common OME springs.

Hey now!

I'm not bling, i just thought that all the other OEM stuff is yellow, so i wanted to stick with the theme. I used a scotch brite type pad and ruffed the spring up, then cleaned it, sprayed a bond-aid paint adhesive on them, then spray painted them with John Deere Yellow.

So far i've had about 90,000 miles on them. Only spots from rocks and road debris hitting them, but no flaking or peeling.

Save your money powder coating (I have an oven and gun and do this) is way over rated (I dont want to get into anther debate of why paint is better) the bond isnt what you think it is and if you are using existing springs they will need to be sandblasted to prep for Pcoating... use a flexible primer and flexible paint or use the flexible paint additive from dupont (thats how you paint a plastic bumper to keep it from cracking when flexed) if you chip powder coat it WILL let the rust bleed underneath (sandblasted, epoxy primered metal will not do this as bad or as quickly) FWIW

highjack over, scotchbrite your springs and paint them with spray bombs to hide the color of existing springs for a cheap cover up.

Hey, I'm not hatin' on ya...to each their own. If all of our trucks looked the same, we would own Mustangs. I can hardly wait for all the damage multiplier comments I'll have coming when I post pics.

Anyway, I did search and found that at least one other guy used the Skyjacker springs with good results. Skyjacker does not make a shock or CC for the 80, but I work where I can get cost on them and Bilsteins, and that influenced the decision somewhat. I also ordered the MAF caster plates, so I'm really bastardizing. I should be out the door for right around $625. I will post up results and before/after pics when its done. It may a be a week or so. I am NOT doing it in -8 degree weather!!!
