I got a guy that'll media blast and powdercoat ALL tin and tub(less interior) for $1000. Thats the only to go as far as im concerned. Hes done my axles, brackets, steering components, rear link arms, and disc brackets for $200 and well worth the cost. The only thing to consider is that flat colors will flow better than a metallic color, while the metalliac can sometimes be heavier and blotchy in some areas than others.coat it and be done!!

My $0.02 worth........not a fan of p/coating, it is pricey and not always up to scratch depending on how good of a job is done prep and coating...........if ya cant touch it up with something that comes from a can why waste money?

go for p/coating, but not for me

I don't mean to offend anyone, but the only thing I have seen from this topic is opinion without value added. If I were trying to decide which coating to use, I'd probably want to get my hands on some data... or at least some data sheets to compare if I really wanted to help.

If you really want to help the original poster, then post the datasheet from the coating that you used and let him seek test data from the manufacturer. Your opinion on how you applied it and the mistakes that should be avoided is very valuable to the original poster, not your "low sample size" opinion of how the coating performed over a relatively short period of time.

It also depends on what kind of paint is being referenced. If you reference rattle can paint (enamels mostly), that's not a fair comparison because enamels are pretty poor compared to professional coatings. Urethanes are far more durable than enamels and there are industrial coatings that perform very well for certain applications (like this).

So, would someone please post some powdercoating data sheets or data. I can post some industrial coating data.

in the off road world you will chip and gouge metal, and if it is powder coated it will rust and peel- have you ever done touch ups to powder coatings? no, you cant.

Couldn't find anything by search so I'll ask here. I have a new set of powder coated sliders--semi gloss black. One of them sustained minor shipping damage and has a couple of small chips in the powder coating. Bare metal is exposed underneath. I'm wondering if priming and rattlecanning over the chipped spots will work as a cheapo patch job? I know it wouldn't be a perfect match cosmetically, but I can't see blasting and re-powdering the entire slider. Anyone tried this?

get a heat gun, a harbor frieght power coating system, and fix the chips. A heat gun does nicely for touch ups. Great for sliders etc...

heat gun & powder...didnt think of that!!

Yep...

With a good heat gun (high temp) you can even mix the new coat with the old. They sort of "blend" together...

Fortunately I already have a HF heat gun. Didn't know they sold powder coating systems. Sounds like an excellent solution. Thanks for the tip.
