Hey everyone I'm new to the state and just has a question I was hoping maybe some of you have experience with, in the past clubhouses have been super helpful so here it goes.

I'm picking up an 86 fj60 this weekend from Kentucky and bringing it back to NC. Now I have seen that NC requires that titles be notarized but is this to all titles or just in state titles? Any advise or experience with this would be great!

Thanks in advance!
Will

Ps looking forward to hopefully becoming a member in the upcoming weeks would have been sooner but had to register the 4runner 1st time registration 220$ highway tax

In Caldwell Co, the "DMV" is a company contracted by the state; not really a state office.
There is usually a notary there (they charge $5 cash at the one in Lenoir, you can do CC or check for everything else).
When you register it, they will take your title and issue a NC Title and notarize it (convenient, huh?).
They can do everything except for the inspection there.

For vehicle inspection, I think you will get a bye for the first year (after that it is a "safety inspection;" no emissions). NCDOT: Vehicle Emissions & Safety Inspection
I don't think they can inspect it and enter it in the database unless it is already registered here (kind of a catch-22).

GLWT-registration

I bought out of state (CT) and paid a mobile notary to meet us at the persons home to formalize the agreement.

Unnecessary, I paid $30 to the guy. Coulda just done what was just suggested and they took the signed over title and paid them $5 at the DMV

Inspection was actually required by the state police - dude came out to my house and dug around to confirm all the vin #s were legit. Almost didn't find the body VIN. Behind the double battery setup and he didn't know where to look.

Your results may vary

It goes by the state it comes from,my last one was titled in Texas ,and they do not notarize their titles. It felt weird not getting it notarized.

This too. For my imported HDJ81 with Missouri title and temporary tag, I somehow got out of any inspection for the first year. I never had to have it by the state police, even though it has the weird VIN. Also for my M1101 with a non-standard vin, many have had to get a state police inspection, but I didn't for that either. Prolly has a lot to do with the office and if they really know what they are doing or just fail safe and say you need everything.

Will, your dad was pm'ing me earlier today about this question. I told him what Eric forrest said here. If KY is a notary state (not sure if it is, hard to tell online) then the title will have to be notarized. If not, then no, you do not need it notarized by anyone. Go to the DMV license plate office closest to you with the title and a signed bill of sale from the guy who's name is on the title and you're golden. You can register same day, and if you want to do that, then make sure you bring proof of insurance.

Examples:
NY is not a notary state, so when I transferred Moonshine's title to NC, it did not need to be notarized.

When I bought my Ford, I bought it from a dealer in Texas, but they got the truck from Louisiana, so it had a Louisiana title. Louisiana is a notary state, Texas isn't. I could not transfer the title for my Ford to my name in NC because the dealer did not have the Louisiana title notarized. The dealer had to have the title transferred into their name in TX, which is not a notary state, sign it over to me, then I could transfer it to me in NC.

It's confusing, I know. Short story, if KY is a notary state, it needs to be notarized. I'd the seller doesn't know, then go to a KY DMV and ask.

No matter what, get a signed bill of sale with the Vin and all other identifying info about the truck, from the seller. Prepare it ahead of time and present it to him. The nc DMV has always required a bill of sale each time I've transferred a title into my name from someone else, regardless of notarization.

Hey everyone thank you so much for your input my suspicions were confirmed. I was pretty sure that it was based on the state but all the "required" everywhere on the NC DMV page had me a tad worried. From what I've seen on they Kentucky site it says you should go to a county clerk office key word should.. but I also talked to the seller and he told me they don't usually get things notarized so looks like I'm in the clear.

Slceso: alamance is the same way I walked in and saw the notary 5$ cash then a thing next to it notary required for NC titles lol... very very convenient. M1101 hmmwv trailer?

Jamesurq: I really hope I don't have to go through all that if I do I know I couple local officers hopefully I can just have them do it!

forrest5000: thank you this confirmed what I was thinking!

GLTHFJ60: thanks for getting back to him and me on this and the explanation wasn't confusing at all and i have a generic bill of sales form on the DMV website I'm gonna print out. Well hopefully all goes smooth and a new NC cruiser will be born!

Johnvee: Yeah in Colorado I never needed one but i always got one any ways, when I titles my old 60 there I felt all prepared gave it to them and they just looked at me and said what's this for.... so guess we'll see what happens this time!

I had a similar experience a few weeks ago with one I bought. Even if out of state title says on it that it does not need to be notarized, as was the case on the Montana title I had, the big book of titles they pull out at the DMV may. I had to track down the owner on a vacation and mail it back to him to be notarized. Get it notarized to be safe.

Go to another DMV. They're all different and some of the workers are sticklers and some could care less.

I bought a suburban from Florida sight unseen, had it shipped to me. Title was all screwed up, signed in the wrong place then scratched out and signed again. Address in the wrong spot. Etc...

DMV in GSO Market Street (specifically this one woman with a chip on her shoulder) said no. Gotta send the title back and have them issue a new one in Florida and fill it out again. Meanwhile, I actually had bought it on eBay through a carmax, so the title wasn't even transferred to them. Still in the old owners name but filled out wrong.

I was pissed!!

So I went to the kernersville DMV and the nice lady said "huh, she didn't fill this out right. Oh well" and proceeded to stamp it and pass it through. Got my NC title in the mail a few weeks later.

Heather got me in the habit of getting a bill of sale. It just helps to have back up paper work for the transaction. Helps in situations like mentioned above where the title was signed wrong or something along those lines. You now have a second document with the same information also signed by the seller.

Well got my bill of sales and everything sorted out tomorrow will be packing up and getting the trailer hooked up to drive to Kentucky! Thanks again to everyone for getting back to me on this. I'm excited to get back to working on a cruiser again!

Well after a long slow trip we made it home last week it'll be another week before I'm able to get everything finished at the DMV!

Is that a BURT dealer tag on the tailgate?

Yup and if you can believe this ....
My last 60 had the same thing haha only that one had all the original paperwork and owners manuals this one is alittle less complete. Lol

That's a crazy coincidence. @Burt88 has a blue 62 that came from that same dealer!
