I own a 2022 GX460. There is a lot to like about the GX. But would love to address the poor throttle response AND abismal factory TCU tune, plus obtain any possible HP/Torque gains that toyota may have left on the table. For disclosure, I have installed the Shift Power throttle re-mapping device and it does improve throttle response, but does nothing to address the poor transmission tune. The GX seems to always upshiflt too soon, doesnt hold a gear long enough, IMO. This is likely to improve the MPG by keeping engine revs low at all times. I would like to solve several problems at once, and the factory TCU tune is a big one for me.

I've researched tunes that would be compliant in CA (CARB EO compliant tunes) and Overland Taylor's "Overland Torque Tune" seems to address many of my wants listed above. I have reached out to Quoc at TK-421 Tuning (TK-421 Tuning Inc. - https://tk421tuning.com/supported-vehicles) and for some reason, he is not able to tune the 2022 model year. According to Quoc,

"The software we use has to be able to communicate with the 2022 computer which we don’t have the capabilities to as of yet. Each MY computer is different even though they have the exact same functions. There is no difference between 22/23 other than the computer. Once it becomes available the tune will be ready within a day."

Seems that tunes are available for 2010-2021 and 2023, but not 2022.

Does anyone have insights into this issue with accessing the ECU/TCU on 2022 GX460 model years?
:bang:

You *might* gain 5hp and maybe a little more torque. Just keep your throttle response module and call it a day. A tune is a waste. If it's really that bad get a 550...

I haven't heard anything about 2022 be an outlier

Everyone on here who has a tune has been very happy with them. I have a 470 with headers and an exhaust....and the midrange torque gains were substantial. As far a peak horsepower goes - probably about the same. But, it's more about area under the curve, and midrange torque moves the rig a lot more than peak. It's a great mod and something that makes the rig more fun and powerful to drive. I would imagine the 460 gains aren't' as much as they are suffocated by OEM exhaust manifolds, but I think they'll still help.

Yeah I second this. I just got my 2015 OTT tuned last weekend. Didn't feel much at the top end, but it definitely feels peppier from a stop.

Their web site only lists an EO number for a 3.5L Tacoma tune. And I can not find that EO number on the CARB database, which CARB says was updated today. If you're depending on that EO number you should make sure there is something verifyable for a GX460. Maybe they'll have it by the time they figure out the '22 model ECU.

BTW I tried a Pedal Commander. It does make the transmission downshift more readily. But it also makes the throttle so abrupt off idle that I hated driving it. I don't like lurching from a stop or needing only 1mm of pedal travel to run at 75mph. This was on "city 0" which is the mildest setting. It works for some people but I hated it. I removed it after two trips.

I'd like to get a tune especially since I can register the GX in Oregon. In addition to the TCU and ECU tunes I'd like to get the throttle mapping tightened up some, but not as much at the Pedal Commander. Some of the tunes like YotaWerx offer the option of throttle mapping changes.

My understanding is that the GX tunes that people offer are usually (or always?) customizations of the tune from VF Tuner. Is there consumer software that's available to mess with the VF Tuner maps? When I had a Cobb tune on my Mazda, Cobb offered the AccessTuner software. I spent a few weeks with it getting the throttle mapping just right. Is there anything like that for VF based tunes?

When I talked to VFT a few weeks ago he stated he didn't have support for the 22, but could support it if I mailed off my ECM. Though I've had mixed experiences with VFT and apparently he resides in South Korea so not entirely confident mailing my ECM off to get the 22s unlocked. I've also applied to HP Tuners BETA program but yet to hear back about that.

For the cost of an ECM, I too would be a little hesitant. Wonder if you could find one cheap on a wrecked GX? Send that to them. Albeit, a 2022 is pretty new to try and find a totaled one.

I haven't looked much, there's one on eBay for $500. Like you said, chunk of change just to send out and no guarantee of when/what access to get out of it. Plus then having a $500 ECM to get rid of that no one probably wants.

I would think you could turn this into a deal where if you buy/mail an ECM for them to unlock and possibly make money off of by selling tunes, they would give you a tune for free? Or are these just open source people cracking ECMs and providing to the communities for free?

I'd imagine some tuner would benefit from this and get in on the deal.

Exactly where I was going with the idea of sending a second hand ECM to them. The tune will probably cost more than the donor ECM. But again, if they (the Koreans) fall through, you're out $500 big ones.
To quote an old Harry movie, "you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya, punk?”

Then you'd have to get the dealership to program all your keys and anti-theft to the new ECU, no? Extra hassle and headache. On newer years, that capability isn't available on our pedestrian (read illicit) versions of Techstream, and requires a current subscription. At least on my daughter's 2021 RAV4 it's that way. Not sure if that's a generational change, or a model year change. But could be an issues/other step to using a second ECU for the tune.

No this is to unlock the ECM programming and tables for all 2022 GX. Once that's done, then your individual ECM can get unlocked and tuned via the OBD2 port. The issue is they (VF Tuner) has never decoded a 2022 ECM so they need one physically, so the rest of us are unable to tune our vehicles (or by extension someone that builds tunes, like the OP is referring to). Personally I'm looking to put a supercharger on the GX, but trying to figure out how to tune the ECM first.

Got it.

Sounds like a good group buy opportunity. Get a group of people to split the cost of the donor ECM, in return request VFT provide an $X discount for the group who provided the donor.
