I have a line on a set of OTT highsteer arms. They were for a mini truck using FJ80 TREs. I'm in the process of rebuilding a set of FJ60 axles to put under the 40 and wanted to make sure they will bolt up. I also need to know if Chevy 1 ton TREs will work after I ream the holes?

So in summary

1. Steering arms for mini truck work on FJ60?

2. Center to center measures 1 7/8" will I be able to run 1 ton TREs?

Thanks,
Brittain

1, yes
2, donno, but probably..

Ah, I was always under the impression they weren't being that they are smaller. Anyone else have any input as on the fxj80 vs chevy 1 ton TREs?

Thanks,
Brittain

The answer is...it depends on where the buy them from.

Good Dana Spicer 7/8" TREs are stronger than Toyota FJ80 TREs. But a lot of people just buy cheap ass auto parts store Chevy TREs and bitch about how there Toyota stuff was stronger. This is speaking from experience. I've had high steer with 7/8 TREs ( cheapo's & Dana) , and fj80 TRE 's. Honestly though, the Fj80 TREs are nice because they take up less room for interference when your suspension is fully flexed and your trying to steer. I think they are strong enough, but if you are going to hydro, just drill the arms out for 3/4 hiems joints.

Also, fj80 are 18mm ~< roughly smaller than 3/4" soooo...

You can drill the arms to 3/4 hiems, or 7/8" tapper.

Yes, but shouldn't heims be in double shear? Anyone else got .02 on this?

The best way to set up heims is in double shear and while I have that in the plans I've been running my heims on my steering arms in single with a big washer on top for some safety and have encountered no problems. I use some throttle on the trail when necessary but tend not to beat my rig.

Heims should be in double shear. And I am not a fan of Heims in street rigs. Mookie, why do you say the 80 series tre's are stronger than the 7/8" chevy tre's?

Also, the "one ton" statement is false. They are 1/2 and 3/4 ton ends.

Hell i just read or heard that somewhere.....i can testify that i put my fj80 tre's through some rough duty and never broke one.....i also have been running heims in single shear on my steering for a couple years too but i plan to make them double on my D60 by bending and welding a peice of 1/4 over the top of them ( if i can fit it on the arm) and boxing it in on the sides

lol, yep :D

The single vs double shear is not just about strength IMHO, it's more about safety in a street rig. I ran my old LC front axle for a long time with 3/4" heims in single shear.

So you guys are thinking I should grab them? I like this heim idea and going double shear just makes sense...
