During thunderstorms, my mutt heads for the bathroom and hides her head and shoulders between the commode and the wall. All I can see is her tail and hips sticking out. When it is over I have to call her out. The long haired miniature dachshund we have doesn't seem to mind the noise and just goes about her normal day. However, when a car door closes within a two block radius or some sort of hard knock is heard, they both start a barking tirade which ends only when they are ready.

Angel could care less if the house was blowing down in a hurricane, but is the same with a car door. Sam, on the other hand, will bolt wherever he can. we've found him behind the washer and dryer, in our closet, under our daughters bed, and under our bed. he physically cant fit under our bed, but he manages to do it somehow. Hes about 80 lbs

When I lived in the Keys I had a Catahola Hound, Bayou. He would stand out on our deck or screened porch and snarl at the thunderstorms out on the gulf. We could see them over the top of the mangroves and trees.

Just saw your post James, hoping your pup is feeling better.

My little dude is sick :( Been throwing up for the last few days - brought him to the vet and they're doing lots of tests and tomorrow an ultrasound. They're saying it's liver related and 'don't get your hopes up'....

Wish him luck. I love this dumb little dog....

Well, Ollie just crossed over the rainbow bridge. He had ups and downs over the last month. Some days he was moving around great, some not so much. Yesterday he gave up - it was clear. He didn't want to walk, and he had stopped eating so it was time. Held him and watched the life disappear from his eyes.

One of the hardest things I've had to do. I"m a blubbering mess - my little buddy is dead and it sucks. 5 years is too damn young. :(

Sorry to hear love all of our dogs and anytime we have lost one it's been the worst feeling

With you James

I feel the pain my friend!

Really hate to hear that. Five is waaaaay too early. Condolences.

Must be dog day. My mutt wouldn't walk this morning and yelped when I tried to lift her up. A long day at the emergency Vet office revealed the right hip is worse off, to far gone for a hip replacement so we are going to have the FHO surgery scheduled next week. The pain killers have made it easier for her to walk and the sedative they used for the x-rays has made her very sleepy since we got back. James you are right, your pup was 5, mine is 7 and that is just to young for this much pain for them.

David, is the other hip in good shape? We had FHO on Splash's passenger side in 2013. The thing we noticed after reab, was lack of stability. Definitely helped with pain/discomfort, but she had very little lateral stability. Granted, she was 10 when we had it done, so that might have been a factor. One thing you should consider which we didn't find out about until about 3 months before we had to put her down:

Help 'Em Up™

Great harness, highly recommend. Good luck w/ the surgery!

James and David - we can relate today - We had to put Harry down today :( Vet said he developed a brain tumor.

It was fast and so unexpected. He seemed fine on Wed, but this AM he was bumping into walls, falling down, pooping / peeing as needed anywhere - just not himself at all. He would walk into a corner and cry and couldn't "see" his way out despite it being obvious to us all. He was pretty bad THU and yesterday was worse. Vet said he had "days" to live and that each day was more painful than the previous.

He lived a wonderful 15-year life - truly man's best friend . .our best friend.

Posting Alex's pic from Logan's Run:
