Here is a question for you guys.

What would you choose?

1. Buy a 40 or 45 in the $20-$25k range.

Or

2. Take the money and put it into an LS swap and ARB lockers for your 80 series?

Asking for a friend.

Really depends on what you are looking to get out of either vehicle. I like 45s but I am not comfortable sitting in them, to cramped for my taste. I like 40s, have one but do not enjoy the ride all that much. That's why we've settled on selling ours or building it out and selling it. Way up there on the cool factor but too much to spend on a vehicle that will only get used because it is cool, at least for us. 40s and 45s are and have been holding their values.

The 80 would fill our needs better. We use our current 80 quite a bit, hauling horse feed bags, dogs, going camping and an all around perfect third vehicle in a two driver household. Adding a Vortec or an LS would only make it better. I do not see a swapped 80 providing a return on investment any time soon.

LS swap.

Also, the Cummins R2.8 is now for sale. Turnkey engine setup for $9k.

Johnny after doing some limited reading and research I have come to the conclusion that other than cool factor of the diesel R2.8 the Chevy LS and Vortek V8s win on every other point that is important to me which are

Aftermarket support
Horsepower
Availability
Torque
And I think the v8 might edge out on mpg. But not enough r2.8s for data comparison.

Del, LS swap sounds good. I would then save on the lockers, will rarely need them, then take the difference and go on vacation in Spain, buy a 40, 43, or 45, ship it home. Anyway, the last part is my dream.

I agree that the lockers are probably not needed. Especially not for what the lx is supposed to be used for. But I look at it as I rather not need and have, than need and not have.

As far as the crusiers in Spain. That sounds like fun.

I think that Cummins 2.8 is perfect for a 40 series and just enough, from what I have read, for a 60 series. I think it would probably be underwhelming in a fitted out 80. If I were looking to repower a 40 or 45 you'd have to make a good argument not to use the 2.8.

I'd also like to wait a year or so and see if there are any bugs in the system. TOR or Georg at Valley Hybrids are the guys to talk to if you are looking at using a 2.8

I guess this is what I have been thinking about it. I have enough vehicles and I would rather make the Lx450 better.

Honestly, the Lx450 is everything I need in a vehicle. Currently the engine has never let me down.
Unfortunately for me, I can’t leave good enough alone. I think the one thing that could use improvement is the engine. I want to be able to tow the trailer, and for long hauls on out of state trips I want to maintain speeds on the interstate, 80 mph and still get decent gas mileage. I currently can stay at 75 mph but pay for it in gas mileage. 9.7 mpg.

But a 45 would just be fricking cool.

45 with a 2.8, cool!!

Agree. I love Jason's 45 but I simply can't F-ing FIT. With there being no "reasonable" way to get extra leg room I believe I'm doomed to enjoy them from a distance. I've been tweaking on my 40 for years and finally have a ride now that I consider comfortable .... okay, really comfortable .... but it didn't start that way. The way my 40 drives has me preferring it over the 80 but I have a feeling I will like the 80 better when I get rid of the $hitty Doetsch shocks I put in with the lift. :bang:

And as Stan said ... The 2.8 .... WOW if it was going in a 40. But a 6000 LB 80 would need a little something more.

Of course, as short as it is .... a couple tandem 2.8's might fit an 80. :D

Stan no doubt a 45 with the 2.8 would be cool.
With how much I have put into my 82 first gen i might just pull the trigger and get one to replace the 22r. That won’t be until late 2018 or 2019. I rather focus my energy on the v8 swap on the LX450 for now.
