My mistake, I thought you said you didn't want to take it off.

Do this. Take one of the hex nuts off and drive down to your local ACE hardware. They always have bolt thread testers that you can get close with (or at least eliminate some possibilities). Failing that, root around in the bolt drawers to see which bolt fits the hex nut the best.

The hex nuts are perpendicular to the shaft of the shifter. They don't have any correlation to the size of the shifter threads, unfortunately.

Here's a pic - hex nuts go in the side...

Alright, then take the knob to your ACE instead and spend 10 minutes figuring out which bolt threads in. Boom, done!

One more time. The old knob has a universal attachment with hex nuts that tie it down to the right size. - IE: You cannot use it to figure out the size. The new knob is too big, and needs an attachment to size it down.

I will teflon tape the s*** out of it till it fits.

I am completely lost. The picture you posted has threads in it that wasn't attached to anything else.

Take a pic of your shifter with the knob off and post it up.

I couldn't even see the pic. Wondering just how hard this knob problem can be. James, can you text me the pic?

Another great name for a band ..... Lucifer's Squid:

:worms:

That picture was definitely an easy way to confuse things... Forget I asked :)

I see what you are saying:

The Ranger knob with correct threads is MIA
The PO put an "adapter" on it that uses set screws to attach a known thread to the shifter (shifter thread pitch/size doesn't matter)
The knob you currently have fits the threads on the adapter - so it's of no help in relation to the Ranger shifter threads.

Soooooo, you can go post on the main boards in hopes someone will know.
Or, you can buy a bunch of different nuts in the right range and keep them labeled
Or, you can use a thread gauge.

GL man.
