Anyone share their suggestions on a good portable mechanic's toolset?

I'm thinking basic metric/imperial 3/8" ratchets (lots of them)... no need for a second ratchet (1/2" or 1/4")
Would be nice if it had some other basic necessities, pliers, allen wrenches, etc. but I can put that together separately.

Looking for quality, compact and rugged carrying case, etc. Not Snap On pricing, but definitely not Chinese garbage.

Thanks.

James,
You and I are in the same boat - we need both metric and SAE due to engine swaps. And don't rule out the need for 1/4" drive sockets; might not be very commonly used, but sometimes they're just what you need. And you won't need an entire set of 1/2" drive but you'll eventually add a few sockets and a breaker bar. Speaking of breaker, my only 1/2" is an 18" breaker bar, but I use the hell out of the 1-1/4" metal pipe I carry as a force multiplier/handle extension.

I've been fine with the Kobalt stuff from Lowe's. The price can be right when on sale so I keep a set of sockets in each vehicle (and have a bag of other tools that transfers between vehicles. You might want to shop for sockets by how clearly they are marked with the size.

The rest of the stuff can be added a la carte. Somebody here will give a good list. Don't forget spare wire/connectors/fuses.

FYI. Groupon deal on a small gun safe. They also have the biometric version. Not sure if it's a great deal or brand (haven't researched it yet), but thought I'd pass it along.
Anyone have one of those? I had a biometric front door lock that after about 6 months I threw away. Unreliable as hell... about as good as the Iphone's fingerprint reader. IE: useless and slow.

Pretty crucial that this thing isn't slow or it's basically worthless.

My personal opinion from observation over the last few years is that items on Groupon are on because they have proved challenging to sell for whatever reason and businesses that offer food/services are often desperate for business and on their last breath before folding. I have been stuck with several Groupon's/Living Social offers in which the business was no longer around!

For the tool kits, find a good sale on the pivoting head gearwrenches.....they are worth the money, even at full price.

I bought a kobalt socket set at lowes on black friday a couple years ago for 24.99 doorbuster thingie. It was 1/4 and 3/8 drive, had a bit of metric, bit of sae, and a decent case.

and of course, buy at least 5 extra sockets in 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, and 17mm.

Next time i visit @fj40z up in Madison I want to try this.

Just having some fun with the phone.
