I was really hoping to have a year with just PM but didn't quite make it.
My original carb which has been leaking for about 10 years finally just died on the road.
Tried a while to get it to start but there was no indication of any sort of ignition taking place.
The bowl was dry even after cranking a lot. It did sputter to life once but died.
Towed it to Beaver Toyota, Cumming, GA, and they said it was running fine and could not find any problem, that cost $400.
They did put in a new fuel pump. IT started an ran find in the parking lot but by the time we got to the rental car place it was acting strange, not idling well.

Took it my mechanic of 30+ years. He said the amount of gas that thing was leaking was at toxic levels.
We decided on a new carb from city racer $400. It installed fine and seems to be doing good. We'll see if I can get 30 years on this one.
I did keep the old carb so I can get that rebuilt if needed.

As for the 5 speed, it still doesn't shift as finger tip smooth as my old worn out 4 speed but it is decent.
After putting a year on it I put redline MT90 in it. I think that helped a little especially getting into 5th.
Does it have the same 1st gear ratio as the 4 speed? It feels lower.
Reverse defeats me. I can let the truck roll a little, bump it ever so slightly with the clutch, nothing seems to work except putting very light pressure on the shifter and easing the clutch out ever so slowly. Good luck doing that in a hurry.

Oh yea and after backing up about half the time my hand still flops around in space looking for it in the old spot until my brain gets involved.

maybe your clutch isn't fully disengaging the flywheel or the pilot bearing is binding.
As for reverse; Car stopped, press in clutch to the floor, count to 3 to allow stuff to stop spinning, easily drop lever into reverse.
If you can still hear some gear grind - the clutch isn't fully disengaging the flywheel or the pilot bearing is worn out,

Yes, 1st and 2nd gear are lower on the 5 speed and it definitely doesn't shift like a car

i had my 5 speed installed 6 years ago. Shifting has smoothed out a bit but it is still a lot more clunky than my old worn out 4 speed. As far as reverse...I have to either push it in very hard or let out the clutch a bit to pop it into reverse, never really just goes into reverse smoothly. Most of the time you can hear it grind slightly as I push it into reverse. 1st gears is definitely lower. I can take off in second if I want if I am just barely moving. All in all one of the best upgrades for this truck, especially if you need to get out on the freeway. Previously I felt like my engine was about to take off out of my truck like a rocket at highway speeds. Now I truck along at 70-75mph under 3K rpm.

Just cleaned her up and realized the lighted Christmas wreath will no longer fit with my bumper I added this past year.

So my H55F is about the same age as yours. I just changed the fluid and am thrilled about how much the shifting has improved. The shifting literally clicks into place. Smooth as a fine European sports car? NO! Smooth for a tractor? Yes!

No the clutch is going in all the way because I can tell the shafts are spinning because there is no grinding just a solid clunk. Subsequently I can let out the clutch ever so slowly and tell when it starts to engage. If I'm very gentle and slow it will slip right into reverse. Not a problem except maybe when doing a U turn that doesn't quite work out with on coming traffic and you really can't find the time to ease the clutch out that slowly (other scenarios apply)

Seems my notifications are turned off, I didn't get anything about these posts. Guess I need to check my settings.

Your truck is prettier than mine ;)

What fluid are you using now?

Every toyota manual trans ive ever had i have had to double clutch reverse. You can do it without double clutching, but it will hit a slight wall and youve kinda got push it into reverse sometimes with a clang. If you go from first to neutral, let off the clutch, then push the clutch back in and then put it into reverse it will go in smooth as silk. Reverse isnt synchronized like the forward gears. Its a little awkward at first but once you are used to it you dont think about it anymore

I like this product a lot and have used in all my vehicles.

I looked into Amsoil, but it is not spec’d for transmissions that need GL-4. Which could lead to synchro wear/damage. As I recall, the Toyota manuals are spec’d for GL-4.

That is correct - I run the Amsoil stuff in the TC but am running Redline MT90 in my new H55F.

Agree with the above, I've only had my truck driveable for a few weeks with the H55F but reverse is clunky. I put it in 4th gear, then 5th gear and then it glides right into reverse.

Toy_tek,
Thank you for the catch! The Amsoil website even lists the GL4 fluid. My vendor was embarrassed, is providing a full refund and has ordered the correct fluid. I just hope I haven’t incurred damage for using the wrong fluid for the past month! Grrr…

Try double clutching reverse. Seriously it works
