Well done helping out! I have learned that out on the trails, ppl are usually helpful regardless of what everyone is driving.

Yeah, no doubt. They were young and adventurous, and there was no indication that the road would become so bad.

We’ve all been there - you drive for hours and when things start getting rougher you push on because you’ve invested so much time. It’s the sunken cost fallacy.

I do wonder what they would have done if we hadn’t been there. They might have turned around but it would have been very easy for them to quickly get into a situation with no recovery options without help. They had no recovery gear and no comms.

The weather is shaping around the Bay Area lately and so I have started a number of projects in anticipation of the various excursions that we have planned this year.

I finally decided to install an OBA system. I originally bought a Viair 400C but I changed my mind and decided to order a 400P instead. The 400P has been a great little unit. The relatively high CFM rate makes it fast enough for me going from 20 up to 35 psi, especially with the morflate setup.

There are well documented downsides though, which are having to open the hood and partially remove the cover, and then having to deal with a fairly hot compressor once I’m done. Also storage is a bit of a pain. I takes up a fair bit of room in one of my drawers.

I still had the 400C siting on the shelf and was inspired by @TeCKis300 and his PS reservoir relo mod, which was really the final nudge I was waiting on to tackle an OBA mod. I will not deny that I 100% copied teckis300’s mod in almost every way. As they say, imitation is the highest form of flattery.

Before I get to the OBA setup, I wanted to finish up an even more significant mod, and that is the installation of an accessory power management system. I completely bucked the standard choices of SwitchPros and SPODs, and instead........
Can you not use the 400P? You had to use the 400C? I want to do on board but don't have the time now, but I really need to replace my "crappy" cigarette lighter inflator ASAP. So I was hoping to buy the 400P and then install it under the hood later.

I used a 400P under the hood. You have to be a bit more careful with it as it is not really set up for underhood use.
I mounted mine on the passenger side behind the headlight.

You can. It is not rated for water exposure and that is the only real difference between the two.

So it has clearly been a while since I was actively posting on mud and apparently over a year since I posted in this thread. Suffice it to say, my life has been a bit chaotic the past year.

The last post of any kind was an unfortunate one as I had to cancel my trip to LCDC at the last minute in late July.

As some on here know, the reason for that is because the LX suffered a blown head gasket. I am not going to go into too much details on that except to say that the truck has been meticulously maintained, including regular flushes of the coolant, and has never come close to overheating. The post-mortem on the engine indicated that there was likely a manufacturing defect in the gasket near the #8 cylinder.

Regardless of the why, the situation was a bit of a kick to the groin, so to speak, but there is not much to be gained from dwelling too long on things. There was never a question of selling, and so I had a replacement (reman) installed and took the opportunity to have the radiator, water pump, belts, hoses, fan, fan clutch, alternator, starter, and a whole host of other things replaced.

That was in August, and around that same time, my daughter left to attend university in Europe and my wife decided to accept a great opportunity on the East Coast, and so I have left my beloved California for the mid-Atlantic. I literally picked up the truck from the shop and immediately drove it 2875 miles towards the Atlantic ocean. The drive was uneventful and the truck ran like brand new.

I am still adjusting to life on the East Coast, although my work is still in the Bay Area, so I travel back very frequently. It will take some time to figure out where a person can actually disperse camp between the Canadian border and Washington DC. I am happy to entertain suggestions if anybody has any.

In the meantime, a couple of us (@100kiwi and @Toyota Warrior) had been planning an extended backcountry trip across the Arizona Strip and the North Rim for a couple of years now and moving cross-country couldn't get in the way of that. Of course "extended" became slightly more "extended" for me, but I loaded up a couple of weeks ago and headed back west -

Good to see you posting again. Life happens to all of us, some times when we are least expecting it!
That head gasket failure is becoming a know issue lately - glad to see your truck is back on the road. Did the reman unit come from another 200?

Overall, my journey was well over 5000 miles, and included 5 National Parks, a few National Monuments, National Forests, and National Recreation Areas.

Mid-May is definitely the time to do a trip like this because the weather is mostly good, and the crowds and traffic are slightly more manageable because most people are saving PTO for Memorial Day week. There was some rain leaving the East Coast and I hit some snow going over the Rockies, but other than that, it was nearly perfect.
