Hi Guys,

So awhile back I went with a complete J series spring and L shock setup from old man emu. The truck rides fairly harsh and I have wanted to have a softer ride for road travel on the freeway during long trips. I recently swapped to the tourflex 3 inch springs from trail tailor and did notice an improvement on the ride and especially with the side sway of the truck over bumps.

I am now thinking of swapping out the shocks to see if that helps and wanted opinions from others whom have moved from OME shocks to others. I don't have the budget to spend the money on very expensive shocks $1000 + so the choices need to be limited to the standard bolt on type such as cell foam, gas, etc.

I have been told by Jason at trail tailor that swapping the OME with tuff dog foam cell shocks will help soften the ride. Any opinions from others moving from OME to tuff dog cell foam appreciated.

In summary I am looking for options and opinions to get a softer ride by swapping my shocks out for something else in a similar price range. I am ok spending a little more.

Can you guys give some thoughts on the TD foam cells for Noah. These comments should range from a couple hundred miles to 8-9K miles.

Thanks all,

Jason

thx Jason, I am specifically interested in hearing from those whom have moved from OME shocks (in good shape / not worn out) to TD foam cells. I am trying to be careful not to swap a shock for another same shock and get nothing out of it.

There are a few there that can help you if memory serves me....

I’ve run OME and am currently running Tough Dog 41mm Foam Cell. I don’t think there is even a comparison. The Tough Dog foam cells are night and day better.

Approximately 25k miles on mine.

I highly recommend. I will be going to the foam cells on my son’s 80 as well.

FWIW, I was the first to try the Tough Dog 41mm Foam cells. I went completely off Jason’s word having bought other stuff from him. He didn’t let me down. They are as good as he advertised.

After installing them I left a couple of weeks later and drove 4400 miles over the course of two weeks.

I don’t get crazy off road but I see a lot of fire road type roads. A lot of washboards and gravel.

25K.. holy... I thought you were around 8K. Good to know.

4400 were in the trip! Haha.

It might be more than 27-28k. I’ll have to check. Just was being conservative...

I’ve been running my Tough Dog kit for about 15k now... Wow is all I can say. I service vehicles on the weekends including a handful of 100s and have ridden in about every system there is out there.

For the price range, Tough Dog wins hands down. I’m currently riding unloaded on the medium duty suspension kit and I still can’t complain. It’s served me well and I am currently in the process of upgrading to the adjustable absorbers for the rear. Tough Dog gets my vote everyday.

we're your OME's worn out before you replaced them? What springs are you running?

I replaced my OMEs with stock Tokico shocks. They were not worn out. I think they had about 15-20k on them. I gave them to another guy. He ran them for a while.

My 92 is running stock springs and Tokico OEM shocks. My 93 is running TD 2” light duty Springs with the 41mm foam cells. It was running stock springs and rancho RS5000 shocks IIRC.

I will be going with the same setup on my 92. For reasonable money it is as close to perfect as I’ve found.

I know this is a shock thread but since you asked about my springs I will mention that the “light duty” springs are rated for 600lbs IIRC. I ran fully loaded with around 1000lbs of gear for the 4400 mile trip. Road like a dream.

Since then I’m running a dual swingout rear with 2-3 scepter cans, 80L fridge, and 200ish lbs of gear/work stuff at all times. Ride is great.

Did my TD install with Hankook Dyna Pro ATM tires last August. I have out less than 5,000 miles. The ride is very good. Steering is tight and side to side sway is not an issue. The LC has stock bumpers with the only other mode being TT sliders. 40mm lift in front and 20 in the rear.
I’m happy with TD. Jason won’t steer you wrong.

I've got less than 1000 miles on my 41mm TD shocks but i can report a more compliant ride on and offroad than the stock coils coupled with new bilstein dampers. I'm happy with them thus far and its nice to not be getting jarred on ever root/rock/expansion joint.

Good day greetings from a novice of all sorts related to mechanical things.

Quick question - is the Tough Dog 41mm Foam Cell a direct replacement for the OME L shock? The Trail Tailor site states that the shock is good for 3 inches of lift.

I would like to install the Foam Cell to complement the planned installment of front J springs with rear OME heavy springs for a level look. Current setup is OME Heavy springs and OME shocks (more than 10 years old and 100K miles).

Thanks.

Do you already have he J Springs? If not, buy the 3” TD Springs. Just call Jason and talk to him. He will steer you right.

Are there Tough Dog shocks for a 4"-5" lift? I have not been real happy with my OME "L" shocks and they seem a bit too short for my 4" OME competition springs that I'm running.

B,

The 4" TD foam cells measure out at:

Front- 17.00" to 27.50"
Rear- 17.50" to 27.50"

I can get shocks for up to 6" lifts.

Those lengths look perfect for my needs. I will get in touch with you when I'm ready to order some. I want to get them installed before some of my summer wheelin trips. Will probably get in touch around May.
