If you pull the pans, you will have the oil pickup tube in the way, but that comes off with a couple nuts. Otherwise it is like any other engine with open access.

You can take off a main cap to see one of the crank bearings. pull #5, or #6, furthest from the oil pump.

You can also see the cross hatchings for wear.

Rods, I assume you are talking about Connecting rods. you can pull caps on them too.

is it still in the truck? if so you need to lift the engine to get the pan off.

I did a head gasket change with the motor in. The front timing cover had to be off and the oil pan needs to be dropped to do this. I unbolted the motor mounts and lifted the motor by the pulley a couple inches for the pan to clear the frame cross-member. It is possible.

Why would you need to pull the oil pans to do a head gasket job ? Also, the timing cover does not need to be removed unless you are decking the block.

I replaced the timing chain, tensioner and front seal while I had the head off.

The oil pickup tube comes off with the upper pan so if both pans are off the tube won't be in the way.

If you do this, be sure to get the square oring that seals the oil pickup tube passage through the upper pan to the oil pump.
