Oil moves from Trany to Transfer...

Hi all

I discovered an odd problem.

Oil moves from my transmission to my transfer case!

Checked/set level on both, drove 200 miles and when I opened the level plug
on the transfercase oil s"shot" out abount 1/2 to 2/3 of a quart!

Color is also odd after only 200 miles (see photo)
The lighter color (left pic) is fresh oil and after 200 miles it looks darker with slight fine metallic glitter! (right pic)

What's the problem here and how can it be fixed economically?

If oil is moving from the transmission to the transfer the "oil bypass hose" will not work. You need to be able to move the oil back UP to the transmission. Time to get a new seal between the tranny and transfer. I had the same problem with my truck, most people you hear about the oil migrates the other direction. The solution I had was to use a 3/8" drive oil pump and the hoses connecting the tranny/transfer (like the bypass hose) every week I would take my cordless drill and connect it to the 3/8" drive pump and move all the oil back up to the tranny. I've sinced fixed all my leaks and no longer have to do that but it could buy you some time before you have to tear it all apart to replace that seal.
Clear as mud?

you are apsolutly right...he would need to do that...i read it fast and thought he was talking about it going the other way...i should stick to the historical stuff :)

I ran that setup in my truck for about 3 years, it actually worked really well. The pump was about the size of a hockey puck with a 3/8" drill adapter to drive it. Hook the drill up and spin it for about 3 min. and it would suck all the extra fluid in the transfer and put it back into the transmission. Once the fluid in the transfer dropped to the fill hole the pump would stop moving fluid. When I rebuilt the transfer and replaced the transmission with a H55, I also drilled out the transfer breather and replaced it with a hose ran into the engine compartment, pressure seems to be the culprit a lot of the times. The pump I picked up at a local camping/RV supply and was designed to pump oil.

The oil return kit will actually work to a point with the described problem. As you stated, the oil "shot out" because it was under pressure. This pressure will push the oil up the return hose. It is a good CHEAP fix, but will work (as Tapage said) for a long time. I had the same problem and only fixed it when I was installing the H55F.

I'm not sure I understand what causes the pressure. And how does oil flow into the transfer case if it's pressurized?

If the venting is working it probably is not pressurized, but the oil is so heavy when it is above the fill hole and you open it, it globs out in such a way that it seems under pressure. I am under the impression that it is just the weight of the oil making it seem under pressure. When I checked mine it came out of the transfer case at a rather aggressive rate, but not from internal pressure.

Under operation and right after there could be some pressure due to heat...

I'm going to try the MAF by-pass, there was enough oil in my transfer that I'm pretty sure it would have gone back up the hose to the tranny fill point ..At least I'd know all the oil would't be in the transfer.. wouldn't I?

2 thinks that I do .. it's removal the oil seal between the tranny ( H55F in my case ) and the t-case, alowing the free oil flow from the tranny to the t-case ( when the tranny works - Cruiser runing, I thought it something realeted to centrifugal forces or so ) when the t-case it's full over the hose ( from the MAF kit ) the oil start going to the tranny again ..

Other thing that I do it's fill the tranny much more over the plug limit .. with the top cap.
