I went through the search and did not quite find the answer to my question.

EDIT: Originaly entered 10-40W in error, using 0-40W

After searching this board I switched to Mobile 0-40W synth oil. Now I have several leaks were I did not before. Small leaks with only a few drops on the floor. Oil starting to cake external to the motor. Have not had to add any new oil and it's been 2 months since I switched.

Question: Will it likely continue to leak and I should switch oil, or will the seals eventually stop leaking and I should keep running the Mobile 1.

I saw several posts where people had big leaks and switched.
Thanks,

Ken

hmmmm kind of interesting since you are using a heavyer weight oil. I could see the leaks increasing with say a 0w-40.

Ken, I vote stick it out for a little while, and see what happens. Have you spent much time under the engine, or are you mainly going by what's on the garage floor? Could some of it be from a sloppy filter swap? And I thought we agreed you were going with the 0w40... not that there's much of a difference leak-wise.. the 0 may be even a little worse?

You can remove that front skid plate very easily, the one near the steering dampener.. then you'll have access to a lot more oily surfaces on the engine. That's what I did when switching to M1, I don't have drips but some of the seals "sweat" a little, though not enough to make it to the garage floor. Every oil change I wipe down the pan, axle, top of the skid plate, and anything else that's oily, and there's only a slight buildup on those surfaces by the time I get to the next one.

But yes, as your search already revealed it's fairly common that synthetic oil will expose leaks that the dyno didn't. hth..

Correction - I am using 0-40W and not 10-40W as I typed above

What is Mobile 1, some new brand of oil? I have seen Mobil 1 but never Mobile 1 in a store. Maybe someone sold you some repackaged crappy oil.

Thats why it was 20% off. Staright from the refineries of Alabama.

Mobil 1 0-40W per your recommendation is what I am using Cary. Sorry for the mis-type.

Sorry to pick on you, it is a pet peeve or mine!!!

Leakage is something that seems to vary depending on individual vehicle and oil. If it is not bothering you, I would continue to use the Mobil 1. If it does, give the Shell Rotella T Synth 5w-40 a try. You could also try throwing a quart of redline 5w-30 or 5w-40 in with your Mobil 1. The Esters in the redline cause seals to sweal and may help.

Cary

What, that I mis-spelled Mobil? I am an engineer and worthless without a spell checker.

Sorry if I peeved you!
