Doing a oil change this weekend on my 93 cruiser, wanted to know what type of oil viscosity you guys would advice me to use 10w30 or 10w40 and what brand of oil(I usually buy oem toyota oil)-truck has 175K and still running like new. I also live in the bay area-not too cold. This is a pretty dumb question but, how many qts. do you guys put when you drain and refill engine oil-7 qts or 8qts? thanks
Toyota brand motor oil is fine. The recommended viscosity is 10-30. Capacity will depend on the filter you choose to run. If you use a 15600-41010 it will take about 8 quarts. If you use a 90915-YZZD3 or a 90915-20004 it will be about 7.5 quarts. If you use an aftermarket filter you will veer into the ditch and it won't matter how much you put in.....
Any good quality oil will do, but unless you live near CDan, I see no reason to buy Toyota branded oil. Toyota is not an Oil Company! I think it's Mobil Drive Clean anyway. If you want to treat your baby right, how about Mobil1 0w-40? Cary has published several outstanding oil analysis tests on this site. If you don't want synthetic, use Chevron Supreme, Castrol GTX, or Penzoil. Any of the major brands will be fine. Chevron is available cheap at Costco and is supposed to be outstanding conventional oil. My 80 always gets synthetic, though.
edit-I would reccomend the Toyota Oil filter, I use the big one that ends with ***10. Oil pressure reads slightly higher on the guage than it does with the little one. If you can't get to Toyota, the Napa Gold 1515 is an excellent choice.
Yes, fully synthetic oil is OK on a high mileage 80, but if you're happy with your current routine then there's no compelling reason to change. 2,500 mi intervals with M1 will get expensive. It's almost $5/qt in my neck of the woods.
I've always used M1 synthetics on mine (just moved from 5w-30 to 0w-40 on the last oil change), in 7.5Kmiles intervals. However, the last two years we're not going to the malls a lot so I really miss working (changing the fluids) on my cruiser just something to put into considerations.

I'm not giving advice only repeating what I use and why in my 93.
Shell 10w-40 syn. burns oil at about 1 qt every 3000 - 4000 miles and keeps the pressure a little too low for my liking. $19.45 at walmart.
Shell Rotella (sp) 15w-40 dino, no oil consumption at 5000 intervals and pressure is acceptable. $6.77 a gallon at walmart, filters used fram (boo!), napa, and toyota none seem to make a difference in my case.
I also use a can of seafoam everyoil change, but that's just me.
cc93cruiser- I use mobil 1 0W-40 year-round for about the same weather conditions you experience.
I used the "Search" function, chose "Advanced Search", searched the 80s Tech Forum, titles only, and used the search terms "oil use". Here's one of the threads that came up (there are better ones):
I just change mine, 8.5 qts of Mobil 1, 15 - 40 @ pep boy 5 bucks each. Seems like no ones caries the 0 - 40 Mobil 1 around here, must be because I live in So. Cal and it never really gets that cold. I also bought a Mobil 1 oil filter, anyone ever hear of these? I change my oil every 6,500. I figure this way it costs about the same as cheaper oil (every 3,000 miles) but I get the benefit of 100% syn. and less hassle.
There is no such product as Mobil 1 15w-40. If you purchased 15w-40 it is most likely Mobil Delvac 1300. Check the bottle and let us know what it is. Bottom line is 15w-40 oils are usually HDEO oils and mineral, and normally good quality.
As others have reported in the mind numbing posts on this subject the Mobile 1 0W40 is the shizzle.
For those of us that don't what to drop that kind of cash on an oil change or can't find it in our area, Shell Rotella Synthetic 5W40 is another great option and can be picked up at any Wally World at a reasonable price.
Also the Toyota Filters listed by CDan are great filters. But if you can't get your hands on one of them, K&N also makes a good filter that has the same anti drain back features and what not. Something to keep in mind when the inventory of 20004 filters runs dry.
