Put the new carb back on for the tenth time fitting and figuring. I was missing a washer.....that is until I fired it up and heard something in a cylinder that didn't belong. Now to remove the head and inspect and pray nothing is really hurt.

uhhhh...that sucks

Ouch. I have a camera you could borrow but not garunteed to see anything. Hope its not too bad. I just went through an inspection because a missing carb nut as well.

I'll start to pull off the head tomorrow. I only heard a handful of pings so I am hoping for the best.

Thanks!
Head is ready to come off in the next hour. Eating a little lunch first to get strength to lift that 80 lb head.

Maybe I need to go buy a lottery ticket tonight. Pulled the head and the offending washer was in the #2 cylinder. Nothing damaged except some small marks on the top of the piston and both valves. The cylinder walls are not scratched and the valve seats look terrific. Maybe I dodged a bullet.

Now the next big question, if someone dumps sugar in a gas tank what color is the gas?

How long did it run with the washer in the combustion chamber?

Didn't even break the spark plug, damn. You're one lucky son of a gun.

I'd still replace those valves, and clean off the top of the piston to get a better look at the damage.

That will be tomorrow.

Do you really think someone dumped sugar in your gas tank?

Sugar killed the ~’78 Corolla wagon (Doo Doo Brown) we had in about ‘82. At least that’s what mechanic said. Wasn’t dead yet but it wasn’t gonna be pretty. I’m sorry, though, for not having the foresight at age 9 to ask for a sample to take home and save for 36 years (unlike my junk in the Stuff/Childhood thread). I’d wager the Pentagon has some sort of surveillance system now but I’m sure our crapwagon isn’t why.

That's crazy lucky! You've got a good ear!

Actually my hearing is quite poor but that pinging was out of the ordinary and not hard to hear at all. All-in-all I am very happy the damage is as limited as it appears to be.

Started the reinstall of the head this morning. First; turned the head over and poured mineral spirits in each chamber to test for leaks. Nothing showed up in 2 hours so I cleaned the gasket remains from the head.

This is what the #2 cylinder valves looked like when I removed the head. Marks on both valves.

Dumped out the mineral spirits and cleaned each chamber with a clean towel. To my surprise, on the intake valve most of the marks were removed when the accumulated carbon was removed.

The few remaining marks are in the dished area and I wasn't able to scrape there so they remain. I expect my luck was much better that I ever imagined. I really dodged a very large and expensive bullet. These Land Cruisers are indeed tough customers!

The saga continues. You can file this under Ripley's Believe it or Not!

I ran out of shade in the car port this afternoon so I wound things up. But before I stopped completely for the day I did a compression test. As seen in the photo, there is no carb so there is no restriction for air into the engine. (Without the photo no one would believe me.)

The numbers are:

1 - 149
2 - 120
3 - 150
4 - 140
5 - 140
6 - 140

#2 is where the washer was.

Photo proof for #1.
