Yep, like any club it depends on what you want to get out of it. I'm technically a member of one in Raleigh but haven't been to meetings lately. I used to go sometimes based on the topic of the presentation that night.
I think clubs are useful if you want to get involved in things like HF contesting, Field Day, Hamfests, Public Service, etc.
2m repeater stuff is pretty simple, I think HF is where clubs can help if you get involved.

Right, join the club to support the repeaters for sure makes sense. I have a long way to go and some recent purchases will help

If you are in a club, and helping support the repeaters, are there journeys to service these repeaters?
Where are they?
I would presume on high peaks with radio towers and such.
If these journeys had to be made, would one then perhaps gain access to trails to the top of hills that would otherwise be gated?

Around here, not that remote, on top of buildings from what I can see on the websites.
Yep, the repeaters I know of are on top of buildings, on radio/TV towers (hard to get access) and even in people's back yards on personal towers.
I thought about making an "Official Power Line Inspection Vehicle" magnetic bumper sticker at one point. I bet they'd sell like hotcakes.

I ordered one of these today, TYT TH-9800, Yaesu 8900 Chinese equivalent (read, copy). Yaesu was only $100 more, so it was not a financial decision, I just like what I read about it.
And look, they are hand crafted!

And... here it is. Got a power supply coming too so I can use it in my home office, the only thing to igure out is the antenna. Will set it up for now with the mobile magnetic antenna on top of a large file cabinet until I tackle the HOV an other parties that will not want to see my 200' tower up.

Oooo aaaaaaahhhhh.
Once you get it mounted in your truck you won't want to take it out and put it in your home office, especially if you mount the face plate remotely

I may have to buy another for home. Plan now is to mount it both places, but the 80 is a weekender at best, so having it at home will get more use/practice. I ordered his antenna with 50 ft cable. Will need a new radio power connector tooOooo aaaaaaahhhhh.

To be mounted on this tree outside my window and bypassing the HOV issues, leaving plenty of slack in case of high winds.
Cable will enter through this window next to my "fat chair" and the radio and power supply on the long metal credenza behind my desk.
Not ideal, but should be okay to get started and not sure how long we will be in this house as our youngest will be out in 1 1/2 years. Neighborhood is turning, lots of younger families moving in and asking if any of the "old people" are thinking about selling. Next house will have an 8 car garage with radio shack on second floor. Till then, practice with suboptimal setup.
so if I put a cheap ham on my Christmas wish list, which one should I get? wit a 50-60$ budget....thanks guys

You can get a nice pasture raised one at around 12-15 pounds for that much. Do your own smoke a cure and it'll be a delicious Christmas dinner.
I know, I know, I'm sorry. I swore to myself I wouldn't keep adding ham comments to the HAM thread, but I couldn't stop myself.
The 8 watt handheld I have linked on page 7 of this thread ($62). Later add the antenna,mic, and adapter I have linked on page 10.

I have been impressed with the Baofeng UV82. You can have mine for $60 and i can buy another one for $28
