There’s gotta be more people than this right? Also, can y’all maybe post what mods you did to fit them and any steering mods etc
 
Tires are 45x14.50-20 Interco TSLSX-II. Massive mods. Fender arches enlarged, inner fenders rolled up, reshaped, and welded.
Center carrier made for front and rear link attachment. spring and shock perches moved forward and rearward and down. 13" Total
suspension lift (no body lift). High steer arm with additional 4" rise. Pan hard drops on frame, rise on axles. Icelandic flares tuck tires so nothing sticks out, big rig mudflaps clip on when on the street- keeps police harassment at a minimum. List of modifications is very long,
maybe 200 mods done to truck over a 7 year time frame. Adjustments made while using as a daily driver until dialed in. Vehicle is plated, registered, and drives everywhere it wheels, and then back home.

Is there some magic in 40" tires... I notice a lot of people running 4D's don't have a spare, is it that dragging a spare that big around is just a pain.?!

I don’t think a 40 will fit on the back of my bumper mount now. It would need a lot more bracing. I’d definitely want a spare but not sure how much work it’ll take to secure it back there

Some manufacturers actually have a different carcass design for their 40's that are much stronger than the rest of the line. Nitto and toyo both do this, with Nitto originally building their 40" Trail Grappler's for KOH. They were even called K-spec's before the DOT version was released, and they have one of the most impressive sidewalls I have ever wheeled on.

That said, they are 150 pounds mounted on an aluminum beadlock. I don't trust a tire carrier, nor do I want to lift and hold it onto a hub. Mine is inside, and it takes up a TON of room. You don' rrealize how big a 40 really is until you are trying to fit a 5th one into your rig.

My head/wallet are telling me the same thing.. Unfortunatly my eyes are telling me hell ya let's do it that looks sweet..!

Do you put many road miles on your set up.. Are the ride/road manors of a cruiser significantly different when you get into a tire that size...?

I have driven @ExpoMax 's rig many times both before and after all his mods. With the low lift, and relatively stockish suspension it drives very similiar to how it drove when I owned it with 33's. I would say the thing I noticed most around town & highway was the braking. He racks up the miles and cruises highway speed all the time. I am sure he can pipe in with his thoughts as well. After all, it is his DD.

No trailer, but it's not a daily. I average 8k a year, typically in 2k+ mile chunks at a time. Put almost 5k on it this summer across three wheeling trips, including 3500 round trip to Moab.

It drives great. You do have to be more attentive, as it doesn't handle like stock, especially with the long arm setup, but it will do 75mph all day long, nice and smoothly without too much road noise.
 
My rig gets used as a daily driver. It took a few suspension and steering revisions to get it there. Mainly I keep control through maintaining the sway bars with disconnects for offroad and running high steer. Beyond the road I primarily use mine for soft material such as sand, snow, & Mud/Water. I will however recommend that if you are going to do rocks/boulder fields and high articulation activities that you add Hydro assist. The factory gearbox is great, you can tap it for pressure feed to the hydro cylinder. Mainly the fab time of installing it is the main consideration. Also, if a lot of street driving is going to be done, you will want to run high steer on the knuckle or even custom Knuckles with an arm extension on that. You want to get your steering arm and pan hard as flat as possible and parallel to each other to minimize bump steer. I agree with the comments above about the spare tire, at first I had mine on a rear carrier, but later felt more comfortable strapping it down in the cargo area. If mounting on the rear, a fold down carrier direct to frame rails would be more logical and add a secondary hitch pin location to lock when traveling. Would be a two person lift and make access to the back a challenge, but safety should come first. You can build a 80 with 40"+ tires, but just make sure to do the right steps one at a time. Patience is important. Hurrying to slap on big tires with a giant lift without the rest of the modifications to balance it out can be unsafe.

One part at a time... put parts in order until you have enough to complete a "phase" of the build. Trying to do it all at once would be overload.
