I did a lot of research when I put a stereo in my 84 bj60. I first bought whatever the car stereo lady recommended first, I think Focal, and I returned them because the piercing treble made my ears bleed. Ended up with some JL Audio 2 way coaxial speakers with silk tweeters. I think I initially bought their 5" model but they wouldn't fit, so now I have 4.5"? Or 4"? What I have now are much deeper than stock but (in a drunken voice) 'TheYrE Ffff-iiine' - they don't hit anything and just press slightly against the inside of the stock speaker vents. I think the pair were a bit more than $100 and I was ok with the sound once installed. I didn't take the sound too-too seriously because the truck is just so loud, but they actually sound pretty good. My head unit is some kenwood excelon that I bought online for $65, I like it because I can plug my phone into it with a usb cable.

Anyway, fast forward 7 years of car pooling and it turns out my now mid/late teen kids consider my truck to have a 'really good' stereo. We have more expensive cars but the kids think the truck has the good stereo, I chalk that up to those silk tweeters.

Oh, and so we're clear: in comparison I think the stock speakers sound like complete muddy bass-less crap.

I had Alpine type R speakers for years 6.5 in the doors and 6x9 in the tailgate. The mounts were never the greatest. Fast forward to today and I’ll be remounting 6.5” Rockford Fosgate speakers in the front doors and 5.25” speakers in the rear door in place of the ash tray, when my new door cards come in tomorrow. The tailgate is going to be getting chopped up and receiving a pair of 1/4” ABS doors in lieu of speakers.

There is no way that 30 year old speakers (even new old stock) could sound half as decent as the cheapest set you could find now.

i was looking at Fosgates today...the 2 spakers come with 1" tweeters. cpl questions:

-how do i know if they fit depth wise?
-where they hell i mount the 1" tweeters??:rofl::rofl::rofl:

I had components (separate speaker and tweeter) before. I cut holes for the tweeter in the door card higher (above the speaker). If I was going to get component speakers again, I would mount the tweeters in the dash, one in each corner.

As for fit, roll your window down and measure from the speaker mounting surface to the window channel. This will tell you how deep of a speaker you can get. If you look at tech data on the speakers you are looking at they will tell you the mounting depth of the speaker itself.

this info...right?

The 5 1/4” speakers will fit without much issue. You’ll just have to figure out the tweeter.

I installed Kenwood and love sound in the rear cargo area. Previous owner had some sub boxes but dogs and gear destroyed the speakers so I bought these on sale and like the protective screen. Still look new.

Hi, Toyota radios are nice radios , their speakers not so great. Americans in my opinion ,have always made the best speakers. Mike

They will not fit in the door due to depth. About 1.75" to 1.8" is all that will fit and clear the window...and that's IF you use @TheNeek 's adapter rings that add their depth to your clearance wiggle room. These will fit (with theNeek's ring used). Amazon product ASIN B000J1C0TO
How's the sound quality?

Very true. The Japanese do many things very well...but loudspeakers have NEVER been one of them.

I have to disagree with you.

The Japanese DO make some very nice loud speakers!

They just often do not show up in automobiles from the factory.

I put some 4" Pioneer speakers in my 1987 Truck and have improved the sound quite a bit.

I also have some Pioneer HPM-60 floor speakers from the late 1970s that sound fantastic!

I don't mean to be rude, but I have provided a link to my install and I commented on sound quality in my first reply in the duplicate title thread you started.

Each to his own. It's clearly relative to exposure, experience, engineering, and room acoustics. It's great you're happy with your aged Pioneers. The Japanese are great with electronics, even non-eccentric lines such as Denon/Marantz, Onkyo, and Yamaha. None of them make good non-automobile speakers, therefore they don't now make them (with a couple of small exceptions with Onkyo). They know their strengths, limitations, and markets. There are no Japanese entrants in the category of high quality multi-channel/home theater or professional/commercial cinema speakers. That's the territory I was referring to.

Because an automobile interior is essentially a nearfield acoustic environment, the benchmark for good performance is much easier to attain. That's why a number of Japanese speaker brands are successful there; Chinese, too, with the case of the cheap Boss speakers.

@LCnAZ has done a beautiful job on his truck and did more research on speakers than I did. Others have done different speakers, a few are posted in the thread in my signature. I used really cheap speakers that were as shallow as I could find because I wasn't smart enough to just measure like LCnAZ did. My factory speakers were trashed and I was doing a head-unit upgrade anyway so I just went for it. Didn't want to drill my door so I printed up some adapters and they seem to help people fit a wider selection of 5-1/4 speakers.
