oem oz sub tanks

This mod has seemed to generate much interest.
I know for my self, I would pay more for a more complete set up.
But unlike Dan, if I have the wrong parts I am stoped cold.

Steve-O I am talking about the 13 gallon oem oz tank that sitts above the spare. :D

Would it be real hard to get a whole set up. (Tank, Sender, filler neck, and possible fule transfer motor setup.)

Currently? I would say yes. Might be better off with an aftermarket tank (unless you want to keep your spare underneath).

I was lucky, mine even came with the shorter filler PIPE!!! But I bought it many years ago, and not from MAF (and it's STILL sitting in my garage!).

It seems a bit out-dated as I can't remember the last leaded gas pump I saw. But none-the-less the statute stands.

Thanks Dan! Hmm, just checked mine and it does not appear to have the restrictor. Can this be retro-fitted in any way?

Thanks again,

Junkyard is full of them. Find a couple the right size, cut them out, and install in your filler.

do you want to sell the one on your garage floor?

Nope!

Thank you David.

I am also curious if the owner's manual has a suggested filling procedure, IE is it recommended that one tank be filled before the other. The flapper does not completely seal off and some fuel leakage appears unavoidable between tanks during filling.

Here (I hope - learning to upload photos on the fly here) are pages 148, 149, 154 and 155 of my Australian 1997 80's Owner's Manual - - -

EDIT:
Also, at another location in the manual, it is advised that the sub-fuel tank always be kept at least 1/4 full. It also says that each time the engine (1 FZ FE only) is started, the fuel pump in-line between the two tanks transfers a small amount of fuel to the main tank, in order to lubricate the pump (probably why it recommends keeping a quarter tank of fuel in the sub-fuel tank).

So Steve,

How different is the long range auxillary tank install vs the oem install? Are parts still an issue with the long range tank like the oem tanks?

Actually a pretty similar install, niether are really "fun" to do. As for the parts thing, the new auxillary tank comes complete, so no problems there. As for the Oz tank, they send them different almost every time, it is becoming more of a problem these days.

We try to get all of the parts every tank obviously, like right now I have an extra tank they sent, but with nothing else. No straps, no filler neck, no sending unit. So I just say we have none in stock. Hopfully by the next batch, they should have everything.

Dan, I found something out for you, I will send you a PM before posting.

I know in OZ the petrol (that's GAS to us) subtanks used a fuel transfer scheme, but the diesel (that's OIL BURNER to us) subtanks had a fuel pump integrated into the sender assembly (i.e. in the tank itself, not a separate fuel pump plumbed in somewhere upstream) and pumped directly forward to the fuel rail.

Yes - that makes sense; I think it's the best explanation for the two side-by-side entries in my manual for the sub-fuel switch (which otherwise appear contradictory, at least to a novice like me).

Can the one from my stock filler be used? But it looks different, it sits inside the neck, with a hinged door in it. Funnels down to the door, with the opening sized for a petrol fill nozzle. Not sure how I'd remove it.

Dan, can this part be bought separately?

Thanks,

Have just installed a long ranger 170 L subtank, had to import all the bits from an Aussie. wrecker cost $700NZ,sender-solenoid switch-twin fuel nozzle-bits of tube.Am using maintank pump with a switch on the dash to change tanks.First test last weekend, switched when main was low and only used about 80L when it coughed empty,it seems the return to tank had filled the maintank instead of the subtank,oh well,I tuned in to Georges site before I started this process and it was a huge help.

The restrictor is welded into the neck. You would end up cutting apart the necks to try to transfer it. I am getting very close to having a "drop-in" installation using a petrol 105 neck. I hope to test-fit this weekend.

Dan, with the 105 neck you can have a competent tube shop bend a section of stainless to the appropriate angle(s) then cut to desired length. You will need to use two short sections of hose with double clamps but that should solve the problem of fit.
Mike

I did better than that ;)

Not til I'm finished....:flipoff2:
