Not sure what those wires you are missing are for but on mine it came without them. I have a sticker covering the hole in the pcb your bottom arrow is pointing to.

Late model speedos had two tabs coming out that top slot. One tab was wired to ground, the other was wired to slot #7 on the circuit board - that bottom arrow is pointing to the hole. The '80 manual says that slot 7 is to a REED/READ? switch connected to the ECC - emission control computer. My guess is it's a VSS - vehicle speed sensor coming diretly from the speedometer?

I am in the process of replacing my speedo and would love to know how having or not having these connections affects performance. It seems many have intentionally removed them. If my '80 has the smog equipment intact , don't I need these connections?

Havnt seen this one yet,not sure of the year?

I can see signs of a sticker having been plastered over my hole too Alex. (I suspect the guy who sold me the cluster was inquisitive and had peeled it off.)

Thanks for enlightening me on the purpose. ....... That makes a lot of sense. (So all diesels will be missing that stuff.)

PS. Since it was connected to the speedo I had a fair idea it must have had something to do with "speed sensing".

PPS. And the guy who sold the cluster to me actually sold it as as "FJ40 speedo gauges" (...and it could well be from an FJ40) But I decided to call it a "BJ42 cluster" because I've noticed it matches those I've seen on BJ42 models, BJ42 cruisers only came out from 1981 to 1984, and many sellers are ignorant of what they are really selling anyway.

Yeah I saw what looked like sticker goo on your pic Tom, also on the top speedo slot, mine had nothing there either (except goo), that would have been taken off when my PO replaced the speedo. Probably a good idea to cover them holes back up to stop dust from getting in, have yet to do that.

Yeah thanks TJS8040

No worries, rockcrawler. I lived in Brighton for a few years. I miss the "bun."

To be clear, those two tabs in the speedo actually hold a small circuit board with a diode or resistor or something on it, so the tab isn't connected directly to the board.

what happened here some of the pics are gone ?? too bad

Yikes! My pictures disappeared too! Bummer..

Hi Jake/Chris

I've been noticing that these deletions have been happening for quite some time now.

My guess is that the administrators have been trying to free up storage space.

And I think this would be understandable because I imagine the costs associated with storing years and years worth of members postings must be considerable.

..... I think the deletions are probably randomly computer-selected from "seldom-read threads" of a certain vintage (& older). But nevertheless it is can be irritating when you know a lost picture holds very useful information and can be very difficult (or perhaps even impossible) to repost.

Possible First model year FJ40 hold over part from FJ25 last production year ?

also , a suspected Partial Production year only part # application ...........

this was indeed removed from a USA Spec. Fj40 from High Up

in the New Mexico Arid Desert Climate ..............

Zero Rust , Zero Corrosion of any kind :)
